skybytch 273 #1 October 1, 2002 So you think you had a bad day yesterday? My kid was driving back to work from lunch when he noticed out of the corner of his eye some wierdo in the car next to him beating on the person in the car with them. He glanced to the right to see wtf. When he looked back in front of him, three cars were at a dead stop. He was doing 35. Slammed on the brakes but couldn't avoid hitting the one right in front of him. He's okay, the driver of the other car is okay. Her '99 Honda Accord has some serious damage to the rear bumper and trunk. His truck has a slightly bent front bumper - minor. And people wonder why I was glad when he bought an early 80's full size Chevy truck. If he'd been driving a little econo-sedan he wouldn't be driving it today! Ironic you would say that. Was almost involved in a crash today - woman made a left turn without looking and essentially ran head-on into a truck. Not sure what the model of each car was, but the woman was driving a 4-door toyota subcompact and the guy was driving a smaller ford pickup. I was one car away from the woman turning. Both airbags fired and the cars spun and slid about 40 feet after first impact. Both were totaled or nearly so, with damage reaching back to the doors. The woman (and baby in the backseat) were fine. The doors on the guy's truck popped open when the cab collapsed, and his knuckles were bloody when the seatcushion behind him drove his arms into the dash. I think he had a broken arm and there was something wrong with his back. I had him stay in the truck until the EMT's got there. Looking at the damage, it looks like the weight of the load in the bed drove the bed into the cab, collapsing the back of the cab towards the front of the car. It must have 'popped back' after the accident since there was plenty of room for him after the truck came to rest. IIHS stats back this up. By far the safest vehicle to be in in a crash is a large car, a Lincoln or something. A large SUV comes in a close second. Small trucks are deathtraps; large trucks are slightly better, but large cars are still considerably better than large trucks when it comes to survivability. AggieDave 6 #17 October 1, 2002 Actually, I feel pretty safe in my '98 Chevy Z71 (k1500). Especially compared to the feeling I got when I was almost in a couple wrecks in my old car, a '73 VW SuperBeetle (1302). Now all I need is to get my hands on a SMAW setup and some other shop tools so I can build a front end replacement (grill guard on steriods) then I'll be good to go. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." skybytch 273 #19 October 2, 2002 QuoteI think what Bytch meant was that he wasn't doing anything illegal to warrant a ticket Exactly. He's very candid about it being 100% his fault - I think his pride is hurt more than anything else ("how could I have been so stupid?"). He learned a couple valuable lessons - don't follow people so damn close (funny, the same thing I've told him over and over and over...), and keep your eye on the cars in front of you cuz you never know what they're gonna do. And he learned them without injury to himself or anyone else. He's really glad it happened now and not in a few months, when he plans to replace the stock front bumper with several hundred dollars worth of huge offroad type tube bumper/guard thing. wlie 0 #20 October 2, 2002 QuoteIf there is an accident someone has to be at fault and someone has to get a ticket. I don't get this at all. Why does the government have to fuck you over on your misfortune. Last year, my fiance had spin out as a result of a tire blow out. So her one month old Legend got creamed but she was ok except for a few bruises. When the cop showed up (like 20 minutes after the paramedics, he hands her a ticket for $2xx. Friend of mine got run off the road a few weeks ago (stupid her flinched instead of letting the driver hit her.) So she ended up getting a ticket for "Failure to Maintain Control of the Vehicle", or something like that. -- Hook high, flare on time
