With Win2k Pro you could probably put a second ethernet card in your machine and configure it to be a gateway. I would still probably buy a hardware router like the LinkSys because it's easier to setup (personal opinion), doesn't depend on your computer being turned on, and you might be able to find a used one for less $$$ than a new name-brand 10/100 network card.

If you are looking for an easy, built-in solution, try ICS:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/professional/help/default.asp?url=/WINDOWS2000/en/professional/help/HowTo_share_conn.htm

It isn't the world's best, but it doesn't require you to buy anything you don't already have, either

Beyond that, get a boxed solution like the Linksys somebody mentioned.

I'll second Indyz suggestion... It's easy, plug it in at the head, telnet or browse to it and configure as a gateway and a DHCP server. Most come with built in firewalling now. There's also a wireless/ wired gateway if you want to go 802.11b sometime

Yeah, win2k can do NAT (internet sharing) but the biggest draw back is that the computer always has to be on. Other issues is that all traffic funnels thro the one computer, if it's an older computer, it can slow things down on the whole network. Lastly, you really want some kind of firewall. Keeping up with MS security fixes and making sure all ports are closed is a full time job. Win2k has a big bullseye on it. Every script kiddie and their hacker mom are lookin for MS OS'es.

If you really want a dedicated box acting as a dedicated gateway, look into the Nix'es... I can point you to some good places to look

I like the router option myself as it places most of the options/settings to at the hardware level. I am using a single port Linksys router/firewall which sits between my DSL hub and my first dumb hub.
Here is a peek on how my home network is put together. Because it is primarily hardware driven I can loose any of the PC's and the rest are still functional.

Nope. Maybe you can look into the technical side of that while I'm in with the ladies. It will keep your mind occupied and prevent boredom, because I'll be in there for a LONG time. ;)
