Casch 0 #1 October 10, 2002 I have been thinking of starting a business after graduation for the last couple years, and I just recently started thinking about making it a skydiving store. Selling the usual T's and such, and also all kinds of altimeters and other gear. Does anyone here operate a store like this outside of a DZ? I could use some tips on how to go about this. Work for a gear store for a few years before you consider opening one. Jump for a few years before you work for a gear store. Get at least a rigger's ticket first too. And have plenty of money and/or excellent credit. And cash flow management experience. And don't plan on jumping much...
jceman 1 #3 October 10, 2002 Ya beat me to it, Lisa.I have just one word to add -- don't. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
Casch 0 #4 October 10, 2002 Well hell if I can't jump as much then screw it! I'll live in a tent and have tandem students piss on me...
DTOXX 0 #5 October 10, 2002 LOL and I thought Lisa was going for the old joke about how to start a small gear store in California - Start a big one and wait. ------- D.T. Holder SIMstudy
moodyskydiver 0 #6 October 10, 2002 Something I heard my DZO say one time... DZO: "Know how to make a million bucks in skydiving(ie DZs and gear etc)?" DZO: "Start with 2 million" "...just an earthbound misfit, I."
quatorze 1 #7 October 10, 2002 Moody, My DZO says the same thing, now I wonder? I'm not afriad of dying, I'm afraid of never really living- Erin Engle
howardwhite 6 #8 October 10, 2002 There are relatively few DZs which could support such a store, and the stores are already there. Not to mention that they could crush you on pricing if you set up nearby. The rigging thing is essential. I know a DZ shop which couldn't support itself on local business but repacks reserves and pilot rigs from all over the country. Listen to Lisa.
