Why is it....

Why is it that mechanics always try to rip women off the minute they get there??
I went to go get my muffler fixed today and right before the guy starts working on it he tells me i need a catalytic converter. Now I know I don't need one-especially since i have had 3 different people do estimates on it. I also know i don't need the 3 other things he told me i needed too....
Maybe he looked at me, realized i am a young college student and figured he could rip me off and get me to get more than i needed, but boy was he surpirsed when i told him he was full of crap, i was leaving, and to give me back my car! HAHA

I know this is slightly off topic but . . . You have to be careful about using the BBB to assess a business. When I had some body work done on my '66 Mustang I thought I had done a thorough job of checking out body shops - even checking their rating with the BBB. As it turns out the BBB will give someone a satisfactory rating even though they've been sued and lost 52 times in the past 18 months as was the case with the body shop I eventually sued. The BBB's criteria for rating a company satisfactory is wether or not a dispute has been "resolved" no matter how many times or for how much.

They also do it to guys. It's a sales tactic.

I have my oil changed at Jiffy Lube or various other places, because I am too lazy to do it myself. They are always saying you need new wipers, new air filter, etc. I think they think that since you have brought your car to a shop just for an oil change then you know nothing about cars.

The bottom line is, they are going to make the pitch. Some will swing and others will hold.

Actually no. They're trying to keep themselves in business by selling you other items that they make a decent profit on. Do you really think those places survive on doing $20 oil changes?

When I worked at my dad's gas stations part of doing an oil change was checking pretty much everything. If we found something that needed replacing or fixing we'd let the customer know about it. "Find a need and fill it" - pretty basic sales technique. We were always honest with the customer though; if it was "on it's way out" we'd let them know that and give them the option of taking care of it right away, and we NEVER tried to sell someone something they didn't need.

I guess I'm lucky - after 15 years in the automotive business (gas stations, towing services and dealership parts department) it's pretty hard for a dishonest mechanic to pull one over on me.
