DrunkMonkey 0 #1 October 10, 2002 Hello All...Man, does that Flu shot make me feel like s!*t... Anyhow, a question... Barring a war with Iraq, and the ensuing stop-loss, I was considering getting out of the Air Force and getting a job in the private sector. So.... 1. Is the current job market as bad/bloody/difficult as the news would have us believe? 2. Do I stand a chance in said job market? Me: AF 1Lt, Aircraft Maintenance Officer BA in International Politics Soon to have MBA Govt Security Clearance Fluent speaker of Spanish So, will I have a snowball's chance in Hell, or will I have a job that includes the phrase "do you want fries with that?" I don't want to be an Acft Maintenance Officer anymore, and for certain reasons cross-training is not available... What's a good non-sales job? I want to make at least $50K.... Just wonderin' Neil
nws01 0 #2 October 10, 2002 I would stick to wherr you are as of now. The job market is extremely difficult. I have 3 Headhunters calling me a day with out of service people looking for jobs. They are not finding a whole lot out there.
freeflir29 0 #3 October 10, 2002 Well....you're Spanish could get you a decent job if you're at the right place and time. What kind of clearance do you have? If it's at least a base line TS that can go a long way in govt contracting. I see lot's of IT jobs that require an active TS. Not sure how that works though since you got yours in the military. You may have to do it over again once you get out. The govt is a good way to go. Thousands of jobs out there. Here's one of the better job hunting sites I have found. You can put a resume up and apply for jobs online. www.resume.hroc.navy.mil/JobOpportunities/jobs_employment_opportunites.htm
Galen 0 #4 October 10, 2002 I think with the MBA and spanish you'll be OK. Being a military officer can't hurt. Just apply to every job possible and don't limit yourself to the type of work you think you're most qualified for. IMHO Respect the Dolphin
PhillyKev 0 #5 October 10, 2002 Quote Just apply to every job possible and don't limit yourself to the type of work you think you're most qualified for. IMHO I have to respectfully disagree with this tactic. Most employers can tell if you just mass mail your resume to everyone on the planet and that will get yours immediately thrown out. The best way is to research the companies that you want to work for and tailor your resume and cover letter to them. That will get you much more response.
