serious thief amongst us

Recommended Posts

i've heard of people swiping personal items from other jumpers before, but this is outrageous. i'm going off of 2nd hand information so i don't know all the details, tuesday night somebody broke into manifest, gear-store and the video room at skydive houston. they took the staff's cameras, pro-tracks and altimeters from the gear-store and the cash from manifest. please keep an eye out for anybody that may be selling a bulk of these items. i'm not sure what or how many camera's were stolen. two of them may be a new pc101 and a sony digital high-8. wish i had more information to give.

Sure it was'nt a local? I've heard of tandem/students seeing all this shiney expensive stuff laying around then swiping it

i have no idea who it could of been. i haven't been there long enough to form a conclusion about anybody. i'm also a slightly overtrusting person myself. it could have been anyone. a student, local jumper, somebody from another dropzone. only thing i'm pretty sure about is that it is another jumper.

Keep me posted, S/N #'s, exact items, etc. and I'll keep a look out for them.

Same here. It amazes me how stupid some people are... we've had people ask us to sell stolen gear for them in the past. It's loads of fun to have the stuff and tell them "sorry, but we gave it back to the rightful owner."

>i would guess its not a local. I mean how the hell would he/she be able
>to use/ sell any of the gear if he/she jumps there regularly?

Doesn't really matter. There are plenty of visitors on DZs anyway, so I don't think there would be much point in dusting for prints.[:/]

And... A few years back here in Finland we had a case where, on a small club-based DZ(the only kind we have), money was mysteriously disappearing from the manifest(or was it the snackkbar, can't remember?)-cashregister. They set up a surveillance camera and caught one of the locals red handed.:(

People can be stupid. And untrustworthy.

It's a shame but you hear it quite often.
On the Dutch forum there are frequent post about missing gear.

"Wil the person who took my jumpsuit please return it" "If someone accidently took my Pro-Track, please return it" and so on....

It's a sad thing, because of DZ is usualy one of the most trusting places around.
It'd be a sad thing if all of a sudden everyone would have to get lockers and constantly keep everything locked away to prevent people from stealing it...but it's something of modern times I think..

My grandma didn't have a lock on her door about 50 years ago....try that now and your house would be robbed clean in less then an hour...

Have the cops done there thing (dust for prints and the like?)

Good luck. I used to live in a small town. Our police station was robbed.
Also, my house was broken into through the washroom. They left a huge handprint on the washer. The "detective" spilled a whole bottle of that fingerprint carbon into my washing machine, messed up the prints, got it all over his uniform and everything in a 3ft radius. I ran the washing machine 6 times to get that stuff out.
Unless other jumpers find the stuff when they try to sell it, you will never recover it.

this really hits home. i don't know who did it, neither would i have a clue who would even entertain the idea. but i do believe in the ying/yang theory. who ever pulled this little stunt will most surely die a slow painful death. i do know who it wasn't though, and that's me, i'm 8600 miles from home! :)
