Bomb strikes

Recommended Posts

Friday night, in Helsinki, a student less than 20 yrs of age blew himself up in a shopping mall filled with people. Seven dead, 80 injured, many seriously. We have never had anything like this in Finland. Most likely this has nothing to do with terrorism, it's more likely to be the deed of a mentally disturbed individual. The guy blew up a home-made shrapnel bomb in the middle of a crowd that had just finished watching some sort of a childrens show>:(.

If someone wants to kill himself, fine with me. But why take others with you? I don't get it.>:(

I thought this was bad.

And then, Saturday night, (most likely) terrorists blow up two bombs in Bali, Indonesia. 182 dead, ~130 injured.>:(. Mostly tourists, of many different nationalities.

I'm at loss for words.

I've heard one report that it was an LPG tank that went up, but I can't confirm that.
WHat is the world coming to?!
I had to catch a flight on 4th July and truth be told I wasn't the happiest about it, I then later realised that I had gotten nail clippers, scissors and a nail file onboard!
I'm just sorry that we live in a world based on rules for the minority: terrorists and murderers are the minority yet we're constrained by rules needed beacause of them

I wish they'd take the less selfish option, save us some taxpayers dollers and put a bullet in their heads.

unfortunately they arent suicides. they are fanatics!
they wanna cause angst/pain/confusion/fear but they are too weak to do it and not die with their deed. they are brian washed by maniacs to think that they will meet ALA. now I am not attacking MUSLIMs...just fundamentalist, miliant, fanatic Muslims! I like the idea I heard b4; they were going threw and destroying the homes of the families of the bombers!

(LPG? Liquid Propane Gas?)
In Finland? No, it was originally thought(hoped...) to be an accident involving gas-tanks, but there were no systems in the whole building that used any sort of flammable gas.

Anyway, it's been confirmed as a bombing, 2-3 kilos of explosive spiced up with lots of different shrapnel. The whole idea seems to have been to kill and maim as many people as possible.>:(:(

The bombers name hasn't been released, but he was a chemistry(!)-student, born in Finland in 1983. IMO it was just a suicide with an attitude.

I've just spent some time reading posts on various web-based discussion-forums. Ones connected with for example some of the finnish newspapers, or tv-channels. There seems to be a common progression in the discussions:

The first posts are something like "OMG, an accident, people are dead". The explosion was originally thought to be an accident involving gas-tanks. Then it was told that this was indeed a bomb-attack. After that, many posters automatically assumed "Muslim-fundamentalists!". Just like that.

The next bit of information was that an unidentified body among the victims was suspected to be the bomber. A white male, in his 20s. So, the next thing the posters assumed was that "He must've been a member of some right/left-wing radical movement!". And as the first news quoted him to be a "University student", the assumptions tended to be towards a left-wing/anarchist/militant environmentalist. All this, with no information, no facts, only assumptions.

When people found out that he was wearing a Nike-sweatshirt, and that he wasn't an Uni-student, but a chemistry student at a Polytechnic, it was blindingly obvious that he was a right-wing extremist! Again, the authorities have given no information to confirm or to deny anything.

Enter the Internet.

The authorities have given, as usual, very little information about the bomber to the public. However, self-appointed "investigators" have taken the bits of information that have been given, spliced those together with different directory services on the 'Net, and, unsurprisingly, have come up with a name for the bomber. Looks like he has frequented many sites on the 'Net that have forums about explosives and bombs. One of those sites is(was) on a finnish server.

Almost all pages that have any information on the identity of the bomber have mysteriously disappeared without explanation. Almost. This is one of the most powerful examples of the saying "information wants to be free" that I have seen . Once something is on the 'Net, it's useless trying to stop it. So now rumors are spreading. Some say that the bomber indeed was 'anti-capitalist', some say he broke up with a girl and wanted revenge on the new boyfriend. Having seen an interview of a classmate of his, I don't believe in either. It seems that the guy was of the silent type, seldom heard to speak, and mostly was left to his own devices. The only time seemed happy, said the classmate, was the chemistry experiment classes.

A family of Syrian refugees was caught in the blast. Their 7-year old daughter was killed, a 9-year old son was critically injured. They came to Finland because they were told it was safe here.

No point in this post really, just some random ramblings about something that has had more impact on me than I originally wanted to admit. I now understand americans' feelings after 9-11 a little bit better.
