Skydive Club Fundraiser

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

My club is trying to raise money to by some new equipment. We were hoping for money from our SGA, but no luck there, so now we acutally have to work. Anybody have any ideas for fundraising?? Unfortunately we cant raffle because it is florida law or something like that >:(. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

hit-n-chug? Dude! Alright, well you set a beer in the middle of the peas, person lands as close as they can (timer starts when their feet touch the ground), runs to the beer (if need be). The timer stops when the beer is drunk. Much fun!

You do it last load of the day, thus the drinking/jumping thing is solved. We do this sort of thing for fun at the end of the day here, sometimes. That and "swoop your beer" which is basically the same thing...

There's always donated services such a massages and, yes, a bake sale. Skydivers like to eat -- charge for the cookies. See if someone will bring out some sandwiches for a donation (you probably can't officially sell them without some sort of food service permit).
If you can't raffle, you can have a contest (eat a cookie the fastest or something equally lame) where the entry fee is large-ish, and a prize is donated. Or you can have a silent auction. That should be perfectly legal. Items at a silent auction wouldn't all have to be skydiver-oriented -- babysitting services, etc. would work for a lot of people.
Good luck with it.

Just be careful with t-shirts. My club has found they don't raise much money. Getting them printed is not cheap (We're looking at around $6/shirt for 50-100 shirts, which is a bit of money to put in up front). We expected a lot of the first timers that came with our club to buy shirts. They were only selling for $10 each, but the vast majority of people figured they had already spent enough money and even $10 more was too much. We started giving them away to all our first timers till we ran out. Hopefully the shirt I'm working on now (http://www.umd.edu/studentorg/cpsc/tshirt.html don't steal my ideas!) will sell better than the old ones and be cheaper to make, but we're still only looking at a few hundred dollars in profit once they all sell. Barely makes a dent in buying gear, and thats assuming they sell. I am viewing them as an advertising expense, not a fund raiser.

By the way, what kind of deal does your club have worked out with a DZ? Ours brings enough people that we get a pretty decent discount on student jumps (nuttin off on regular jump tickets though). On top of that, we get a referral fee from the DZ and we collect an activity fee from first timers. If you bring enough people, that cash starts adding up quickly.

We were considering a gear purchase but decided our club really can't justify it right now. Not enough people, and not enough assurance that the club will be around for many years. It's a future goal though.

We are at ERAU. Basically decided to ground one of our rigs because it is getting old and the main doest flare right anymore (too porous). We also had a lot of first time jumpers join this semester too, so the demand for club gear is up. Unfortunately, I'm thinking of increasing club fees if we cant get enough money from fundraising. Though, we do only charge $15 to join now. Of course that is because the sport is already expensive enough.

Oh, I'm sure that we wouldnt cause anybody to not join because of the cost of dues, but still, people would get pissed off. Oh well, I guess that's the price ya pay for being an officer. Cant please everybody, though I'd like to try.
