Can you imagine 2000 people using these to get out

sad, but true enough, they died anyway. any chance of survival is better than no chance at all. sky dive golden rule: "Never Give Up" if given the option, i'd strap one on, and bail, if presented with a situation in where it is imminent that it will surely beat the alternative. one thing i know for sure, those people that jumped out of the twin towers figured that anything was better than burning alive, it is my belief that if given the opportunity and training they would have safely utilized this escape option, given that this device "could" have increased the odds of survival. (could, being "key" word here)

I'm not trying to sound like a heartless bastard about what happened on 9/11. I'm just saying alot of people could have gotten hurt or killed on that day if it was in use. I do agree that you never give up till the ground forces you to, then you come back to haunt your riggar. I believe the idea of an escape chute is a good idea just not a very safe one at this time even with advanced training.

huh? why do you say that?

I don't know if this is what homer is referring to, but can you imagine the updrafts and thermals from a raging inferno below you? Any ideas how a parachute might react to that? Would you pull high or try to out-track the blaze? Can you imagine how a novice would do on a BASE jump in that sort of situation? I think a 1 in 4 chance of survival would be generous.

what were the odds in the end though? a 1:4 odds was better than the odds they faced that day. in any event, i think escape systems are a good idea, regardless of what the "odds" are, reason being, if you ever have to use it, your "odds" aren't real good anyway.

Much better than the chances of surviving a ride in a collapsing building.

I was thinking more along the lines of 1 in 20 being generous. But any chance is better then no chance. The real problem i see with this is people jumping when they don't have to, due to a false sense of security. I could see a whole floor of people jumping just as they were about to be reached or the fire being almost out.
A handful might live but they might of all lived if they would have stayed put. I guess what is need is some type a signal from the fire crews that tells people that they won't be reached it time and that they should bust out their wannabe base rigs.
