Viking 0 #1 October 20, 2002 I got back from a two day conference at UCFU in Fullerton California. JACC stand for Journalism Association of Community Colleges. i went to compete in one Photography contest and to have a good time. Well i ended up competing in two b/c the guy that supposed to do the Sports contest didn't show until the next morning. i competed in both the On-the-Spot Feature, and Sports Photo Contests. The event for the sports contest was a High School Football Game. The Event for the Feature contest was a bunch of old antique Fire trucks and there owners answering questions for the reporters that were competeing in the Feature writing contest. Well the Football was the biggest pain in the ass b/c the Refs were on a powertrip and kicked all the photographers that were competing off the sidelines b/c he backed into one of us and bumped his head. After half time my advisor went and talked with the head ref and got us back on the sidelines. In the fourth quarter i got super lucky with the LAST frame of film on the 24 exposure role i was allowed to shoot for the contest. As i rewound my film i turned to my Advisor and said "I got it!". That would come to mean something different later that the next day. The feature contest was much more fun and relaxing. I got a chance to try some creative stuff instead of the standard stuff you have to do for sports. I wondered around and talked with all the people that had brought there firetrucks out. The last guy had this kinda beat up old truck from 1960 and i noticed that he has a really funny looking laugh, really toothy. So i just sat on the ground and waited as reporters talked to him and other photographers asked him to pose for them. I snapped several shots of his laugh and i was done. We got our film back that same day and I picked the two shots below and turned them in. fast forward to 6pm I take my seat in the Lecture hall next to my class mates and waited for the contests that i had competed in to be called out and awards to be distributed. As the night goes on my anxiety keeps getting higher as it always does at these things. Then the On-the-spot Sports photo contest was announced. The announcer read through the names. My name hadn't been called when he announced 2nd. I took a deep breath and waited......... He got to about Athu...before his voice was drown out by my screaming and that of my class mates. I had won First place!! I stumbled up to the stage in a state of euphoria with a first tandem smile on my face and damn close to tears. I floated back to my seat getting slapped on the back and highfived as i went. I thought it could get any better I had wanted that first place since i started going to these conferences two years ago. Then they announced the feature photo contest! He only got to Second place before my name popped up again. I jumped up like somebody had put a truck spring under my chair and got my award. You could have punched me in the gut and i would just smiled at you! here are the Captions i wrote for the two photos Jess please don't rip me a new one! I would like your opinion though Sports "Adam Cueto of The troy Warriors goes for the tackle at the ten yard line. The Warriors won their Homecoming game with a score of 27-20 over the Sonora Raiders on Thursday night." Feature "Doug Stoner a Sixty Nine year old retiree shows off his 1960 Van pelt Fire Truck during the JACC Conference held on the UCFU Campus October 19th." sorry about the lengthI swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver My God has a bigger dick than your god -George Carlin

tombuch 0 #10 October 21, 2002 Congratulations! Very nice work. I liked the sports action shot that really captures the reach for the catch. You are right, there was a bit of luck involved. Still, good job being there and hitting the shutter at the critical moment. The feature was really great work, and you should be especially proud. You selected a super angle then waited for just the right moment. That shot is a terrific personality portrait that shows creativity and skill on your part. Please take a moment to reach around and pat yourself on the back. Way to go! If you are not already a member of the National Press Photographers Association, you should join.
