Click on their name on the left, and then in the lower right hand corner of the blue box you will see a button labeled "Send Private Message"

If you already know who you want to send a message to, you don't have to scroll through the threads to click on their name. Just go to the blue bar at the top of the page and click on "messages". That will bring you right to your message center, and you can click on "send private message" from there. The blue bar is also where you go to read your messages. You'll know you have one if it turns red, and it will have a number next to it telling you how many new ones are there.
