kevin922 0 #1 October 27, 2002 I am so pissed at real-tv I could SPIT! I was watching the show while doing some homework tonight... they showed a parachute jump gone bad (what's new) .. here is what has me peeved: "This skydiver's first jump turns out to go wrong" or some crap like that.. well that's nice, it goes on in lithuania and I don't know if they just do things differently over there or what but this first jumper has a camera strapped to his head and captures it all on tape. "Okay buddy this is your first jump, strap this on make sure the light is red before you jump out!" If you guys haven't seen it, it is a good tape -- pretty serious spinning malfunction (i guess it started below the hard deck somehow because he never cut it away - or he just for some reason never cut it away) tape shows him smacking the ground, "walks" away with a broken tailbone.. Now why the hell would they say something like "this first jumper" grrr just to make it seem more dramatic!? Kevin
Sonic 0 #2 October 27, 2002 It's all about ratings - whuffo's don't want to see Flyboyz / Airspeed / whoever doing amazing moves in the air. For all they know that's the norm. They want dramatic stuff.----------------------------------- It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone
darkvapor 0 #3 October 27, 2002 Hhehe.. yea.. I was just bitching about that clip to my whuffo roommate. :)
Luna 0 #4 October 28, 2002 Yeah, I just saw the same footage and my husband and I were both bitching about it too. Does anybody know if that would be acceptable in Lithuania? I just can't see anybody strapping a helmet camera on a first time jumper! My understanding from the clip, though, was that the spin happened very low. Actually, as we were watching the spin we were noticing how low he looked, so I really don't think he could have cutaway. I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Parrot 0 #5 October 28, 2002 Maybe it was his first jump with a camera on his helmet Heh, thats funny .
Void425 0 #6 October 28, 2002 Real TV either uses there vid's because...its all they got to work with or they want to boost ratings.....if it was because of the work with problem maybe we should find someone who has a good mal video...if it ratings...then I hope they drop off the face of the earth when the fad wears out. BMFin 0 #7 October 28, 2002 In Finland we strap a radio to students helmet on first 3 jumps... Wich is pretty much the same size as small DV cams. I just wanted to share that...
AggieDave 6 #8 October 28, 2002 They showed a DZ's swooping contest once, no one got hurt, no one chowed real big, just fast long swoops. The guy was still "there's no way I'd do that" but it was all in all a positve piece about skydiving. Odd but it really did happen.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
kevin922 0 #9 October 28, 2002 I don't know if you guys have noticed or not, but realtv must really like skydiving - every single time anad rashad or whatever his name is, is talking - there is at least one tv behind him with a skydiving clip playing. :)

It's a tandem jump 8 times out of ten though... I was watching a two-way head down jump on Real TV once were one jumper went unstable and ended up hitting the other (got pretty hurt). The announcer was like: "These skydivers say that jumping head-first increases the rush by 100%!!! Watch as they fly through the sky... Suddenly, a gust of wind blows them together and everything goes wrong!" A gust of wind? WTF!!! My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!
Pammi 0 #11 October 28, 2002 QuoteYeah, I just saw the same footage and my husband and I were both bitching about it too. Yup, Merrick and I too. We both thought they must have done it for effect..saying it was his first jump. Maybe it was his first jump of THE DAY and they misinterpreted it? YahooLV 0 #13 October 28, 2002 Well, if we don't send them this kind of stuff, then they won't have garbage to put out there. We should only send in the good stuff!!!!!!!http://www.curtisglennphotography.com

Didin't see the footage either so I can't comment if it was in Lithuania or did they just pick up whatever far-away-country name. ...as for the safety standards and students jumping with cameras...come on, you can't be serious asking that! Well, not in my dropzone anyway
riggerrob 643 #16 October 28, 2002 Let's face it: regular skydiving is too boring to show on TV. Me doing a dozen jumps per day is boring, even more boring if all my tandem students walk away from the landings. The main reason they show scary skydiving videos is so that whuffos can re-assure themselves that they made the right decision not to try skydiving. Main stream TV is all about keeping people comfortable on their couches.
