fool 0 #1 October 29, 2002 OK, this past weekend was the closing weekend of our season here in cold snowy Winnipeg. A few of us (4) did 3 loads on Sunday to try and close out the season on a good note, (and it worked.) I just thought it was kind of funny that the windsock I looked at before our jumps was touching the ground, which made me kind of drool, because I have been working on some swooping on my own canopy, as well as a Samurai 120. I jumped the Samurai for all three loads that day, and got two really decent swoops, and one not so bad one. The first was downwind, the second was cross, and the third into the wind. I noticed a big difference in the forward speed from the first two to the last one, and was kind of curious as to why it made that much of a difference with what little wind we must have had. OK, here's the funny part...After the last load of the day, we brought in the windsocks from the bowl, and started cleaning up a little bit and gathering our gear, when we went to put the one sock away, it was discovered that the fricken thing was full of snow!!! In retrospect I'd guess the winds were only 5-7 Mph, but I still thought it was kinda funny that the only one I looked at was the one full of snow. nacmacfeegle 0 #5 October 29, 2002 "I noticed a big difference in the forward speed from the first two to the last one, and was kind of curious as to why it made that much of a difference with what little wind we must have had" Lets do a little math here....Assuming 7mph wind, which not much more than a mouse's fart.... say the Samurai flies with an airspeed of about 30 mph, into wind your ground speed would be about 23 mph, downwind you would be going about 37 mph, thats a difference of 14 mph, or about 60% increase in ground speed. And that is without any speed increasing maneuvres such as a carve, or a hook into finals..... I dunno what you are loading that 120 at, so your numbers will inevitably differ. Big Air sugest a wing loading of 1.3+, which may be a little aggressive for low jump numbers, but I'm no canopy nazi....It must have been fun swooping deep snow, but bear in mind if you stick a leg into a drift doing 30+ mph, something is bound to hurt..
