Rule #2 - Do Not Swoop The Pond

Recommended Posts

If anyone ever tells you organizing a small boogie at an off-dz location is easy... they're lying!

Myself, Sebazz and a couple friends managed to pull off a decent weekend of jumping and an epic party Saturday night at Star Farms in Paso Robles, CA.

We thought we were hosed on the weather at first, but the fog burned off to clear, warm skies and we sent the first load up at noon on Saturday.

The only real rules for the boogie were - don't land in the ($30,000, lighted, with laser leveled grass, serious competition quality) croquet court, do not swoop the pond and follow all BSR's and FAR's. Apparently one guy didn't hear the rules though...

The pond is roughly oval shaped and not all that big. It may be swoopable, but conditions would have to be perfect and the canopy pilot would have to be DAMN good. There's a house and the above mentioned croquet court at the south end, a horsehoe pit then a 100 foot cliff on the west end, palm trees and tiki bar at the north end, more palm trees and beach area over most of the east side. The only possible exit point is on the east side, about 15 feet wide and includes about a foot of concrete berm at the water's edge then some grass and a dirt road.

Sure enough, first load, this guy decides he's gonna swoop it. Turned too low, was digging out as his toes hit the water, did two spectacular somersaults and came up chest deep in water about 5 feet from the concrete berm. He wasn't hurt physically, but he stayed far from the crowd until dinner was served! The ground footage was the big hit of the video review after dinner - unfortunately the footage from his camera didn't survive immersion.

I spent Saturday on the ground - between getting people registered and manifested, shopping for beer and dinner and generally schmoozing with a bunch of people I haven't seen for 6+ years I had no time left to skydive! The 26 jumpers that turned out kept the 206 flying right up 'til sunset; we got 10 loads off on Saturday.

The party was seriously fun. After dinner and watching video from the day it was time for a Lancaster Bomber reenactment, which went very well ;) We had guitars, drums and digeredoo (sp?) jam sessions going off in the shop area late into the night (my thumbs and palms still hurt from beating on the drums). Most people crashed in tents or cars, mainly because they were all waaaaaay too drunk to drive! We killed 11 twelve packs of good beer, a 30 pack of cheap beer and a six pack of girly drinks in under 5 hours...

Sunday started foggy and a bit slow; got the first load off at 11 and only managed 5 total by sunset. I did my one jump of the weekend with four old friends, three of whom I hadn't jumped with since at least 1994.

I finally left Star Farms about 6 pm. Was talked into visiting my old roommates place (a beautiful 5 acre parcel in the hills west of Atascadero) on the way home... finally got on the road at 8 pm, arrived home at 2 o'clock this morning.

Worth all the work and stress? Oh yeah! Seeing all my old friends walking around with big smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile! It was extra fun for me - "Look at the world record holder!" "Yes, I am... did you want to touch me?"

Then there was the guy who swooped the bbq area on Sunday... a certain person is lucky I didn't have my camera in hand for that one! ;):P:)
Speaking of pictures, I took a bunch and will have them up on my website sometime this evening.

We all had so much fun we're gonna do it again next year, bigger and better! So, you California jumpers, mark your calendar for the Star Farms boogie/Paso reunion September 20-21, 2003...

Indeed the Paso reunion boogie was a great success.

Huge enormous props go to Lisa(da bytch) for getting the majority of jumpers out there.

And then of course Peter(TitaniumLegs) and his wife Steph for getting the general outline for everything together.

And me for um... Well just helping out with as much as possible.

Star Farms is probably the most epic setting for a boogie. Every jump is like a demo jump. And yes the party... the party...;) besides just the beer I happen to know several bottles of whiskey disapeared into peoples livers too!(mine included) Next year will be even more spectacular and I recomend people mark their calenders now.

Yes I nearly avoided death yesterday by carving my canopy around the packing area, the shuttle truck, the BBQ, the tikki hut, the shop, the awning over the BBQ, people, etc... And Peter did get video of my swoop that won me lucky dumbass of the day.( The pond swooper won Saturday's award;))

It was different, it was a lot of work, IT WORKED PERIOD!, it was fun, it was most epic...B|

P.S. ~ Lisa, you rock!! Peter rocks!! Steph Rocks!! US... US... F~ US!!!

Till next year don't swopp the m'f'n pond, croquet course, or for gods sake don't swoop the tiki hutB|

Can you just imagine what kinda of DZ this was with Lisa and I as DZO's...

We were DZO's for two whole days... and we didn't turn into assholes! Everyone still liked us at the end of the day on Sunday! See... it can be done...

btw, Seb - your dad and his place ROCK! Thank him again for me; my "suite" was absolutely perfect. B|

Here's some pics!

The first two are random guys... ;)

Some of the group in the packing/landing area.

More random guys. It got warm... I like it when it gets warm :P

The load I was on - me, Mike L., Steph, JoanE and Dave. We all jumped together back in the early 90's.

A shot of the grass (beach, pond and house in the background) on Sunday morning.

Packing and talking.

Peter bringing in some smoke.

My old roommate Josh swooping in.

Part of Sunday's sunset load - Steph, Rich and Seb. Rich hadn't jumped in over a year and really wanted to - so I let him have my slot on the last load and let him use my rig. The grin on his face after he landed was so worth it.B|

Winding down in the grass on Sunday evening.

Saying bye and thanks to the pilot. ;)

I'll be putting the rest of the ones I took on my website tonight. :) paso002.jpg
