Well it looks like AFF will be in the spring for me. Need advice.

Sounds good. One more point on the advantages of a local DZ - let's say, God forbid, something comes up during your training and you need to postpone the rest of it or something. Would you rather have already sunk $1000 into training in some other state, and have to take more vacation time or whatever to go back there at a later point and *HOPE* the weather cooperates, or would you rather do it somewhere closer to home where the cost of repeatedly going back to the DZ is nowhere near as high? Food for thought...

Very good point Joe! This is exactly what happened to me this past May. Took 2 weeks off from work, travelled to Florida, dumped a ton of cash, was injured immediately and then had a death in the family and had to return home on my third day. Fortunately the dz was really understanding and refunded my cash (thanks to the advice of someone who visits this site:)
But, do you think lightening strikes twice? And since that dz was very cool, wouldn't it be right of me to patronize them?

Patronize them after you have your licence and your own gear. Learn where you are going to be jumping the most to get the best feel for the jumping style at your home. Some places are chilled, others have a high tempo. Learn to take care of your self then go enjoy places like FL in the middle of next winter.

We just recently had some visiting jumpers show up at the DZ, they were welcomed into the DZ rapidly but since they had just met everyone they just wanted to jump together or alone. That became a regular occurance since everyone got used to seeing them like that and they got used to it themselfs. We eventually started dragging them out with us to make them part of the family again. Try to avoid being that one person that's jumping alone the whole time since they don't know anyone...

This is sort of a double edged sword though. You also have to deal with a lot of the regular skydivers at your home DZ not taking you seriously, and just assuming that you aren't good enough to jump with them, because you did your student stuff there and they still see you as a student regardless of how many jumps and how good you may become.

Sadly, I imagine this does happen. I experienced the exact opposite though, so Meunkel don't think it's always that way. I've had so much support and encouragement from the other jumpers who watched me as a student and know what my challenges have been. It's a great feeling to have these new friends who are 'watching my back', so to speak.

Also, the dropzone you'll jump at regularly deserves your student $'s (and student beer;)). They need students to keep the place running.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
