miked10270 0 #26 October 30, 2002 Morning NacMac, So who will you vote for? I'm still a bit p!ssed off that John Harrison wasn't there, but who is the man who "single-handedly solved the greatest scientific problem of his time" compared to Diana, the woman whose sole academic qualification was 'O' Level Art (failed)? The young "Miss Nice-but-dim" who was invited onto the Royal Yacht as a "playmate" for Prince Andrew (you can all make your own connotations up here) and ended up as the greatest publicity seeker of the 20th century. Her one claim to greatness could be that she did more damage to the German car industry than a whole squadron of Lancaster bombers! Mike D10270. nacmacfeegle 0 #28 October 30, 2002 I dunno who I will vote for, I met the guy who wrote the Software for Sonic the Hedgehog last New Year. He lives at St Michaels, near St andrews, and is quite a cool guy. He invested his redundancy money in an IT course at Dundee, then wrote Sonic, sold it, and retired.. Cool... Who to choose? I think I'd have to opt for Winston, he has some cool quotes, and he held the UK together during a very dark period, until the colonial cousins came and helped us out. He had a wikkid sense of humour, and did some great quotes....-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Scratch 0 #31 October 30, 2002 Quote John Harrison Ah the inventor of an accurate ships clock. A lifetimes work as well. A very diligent and ingenious man.As for the steam turbine..I did a quick google search. Sorry Nacmac...not Scottish, my bad. An English gentleman by the name of Parsons. He offered his invention to the Royal navy and it was dismissed out of hand. Something about him not being a 'Navy' man. He then proceeded to kit out a sloop (I think) with his invention. When it came time for Queen Victoria to review the fleet he crashed the party in his sloop. The pissed off gentleman raised merry havoc by steaming in between the neat lanes of Britains navel might...all puffing away on their reciprocating and triple expantion steam engines. Of course the Navy gave chase with the full intention of giving the upstart a lesson he would never forget. Old Parsons buzzed around making them all look like absolute fools in front of their Queen and then buggered off into the distance. An interesting side note is that the Americans showed interest in his work and he teamed up with them. To this day most American shipping runs on steam turbines. Europeans go the internal combustion engine route. Here endith the lesson. One day when I have time I will regale you with tales of the great gunnery scandel which broke after the battle of Jutland. miked10270 0 #35 October 30, 2002 Yeah NacMac... But remember that Maggie also was the source of some great quotes: "When Mrs thatcher met the US President she'd do 2 things, first she told him what she thought, then she told him what he thought!" She was the right leader in an era when Britain needed a Mad Bat with a high velocity handbag! It was just a shame that her medication seemed to lose it's effectiveness by about 1987. miked10270 0 #40 October 30, 2002 Now come on NacMac.... I heard you used to be a Young Conservative. Maggie was one of those great British leaders who could be relied onto rise to a crisis and overcome it. Of course, once the crisis had passed, she should have been immediately locked in a soundproof safe and fed by remote control. We may have shared the occasional pilot, perhaps a leg of lamb once or twice, but... but... I mean, all I did was suggest that you may have been a Conservative once, it's not like I accused you of being an admirer of Tony Blair. And I'd rather chew off my hand than be classed as Conservative. Either with or without the capital C.... Err.... Which hand? jfields 0 #47 October 30, 2002 I'm fine most of the top ten list, with the exception of Princess Diana. > Other than look good and give birth to the heir to the throne, what did she really do? Yeah, yeah, the whole ban landmines thing. You know, it is really easy to take up some charitable causes when you can live in a palace, have a government allowance and don't need to work for a living. Her intellectual advances to society? Her great leadership in time of crisis? Her contribution to culture or the arts? I kind see the answer to the above questions as "negligable". But I admit that she had better boobies than the rest of the top ten list. > I'm kind of partial to Churchill, Newton and Shackleton.

Muenkel 0 #49 October 30, 2002 I heard about this poll and I do believe John Lennon was in the top 10. I know Churchill is. The only royals I think that were in the top 10 were the Queen Mum and Diana. From what I know, the Mum was pretty cool. As for Diana, you have to admit, she singlehandedly saved the gene pool of the royal family. One thing I could never understand and maybe you Brits can clarify it. You're the future King of England. You are married to Diana, but you would rather have an affair with the horse lady. Go figure. _________________________________________ Chris
