homer 0 #1 October 31, 2002 I have a problem and was hoping you all could help me with it. I was going to make this a pole but, I feel it has used up its usefulness. So, heres the problem it's time to register for fall semester of school and I hate school. I'm only here for my family and to please them. I want to move away and work on my skydiving more seriously. I also was planning to attend the Cancer survivors boogie next summer. However it is scheduled for April along with the Texas POPS record at spaceland. I would be in school at that time which would mean it is out of the question. I'm also in the Army Reserves and am trying to get promoted, but cant do it unless I attend a military school first. It will also require me to take time out of school or wait till summer and hope I can get a class slot then. What should I do- 1)Stay in school 2)Take a quarter off to do the things I want to do 3)Drop out and move away and start living my life the way I want to live it CSA #699 Muff #3804

happythoughts 0 #6 October 31, 2002 Quote Thats what everybody tells me to. What you consider a livable amount of money will change if your life changes. Kids, etc. Almost everyone's earning potential will plateau at some point. If you don't go to college, that point will likely be lower. If you don't go now, you will probably not want to take the time later when you have other responsibilities.

Taking a quarter off is just fine; have a plan to go back. This IS the time to do that. Just quitting and floating isn't the best thing to do, and (trust me on this one) you can drift and float while still in school too. If you do #2, you can make a plan to save some money, and go back. Most employers really don't care if you took a semester or a year off. And if you're 27 instead of 26 when you finish, well, BFD. You'll be 27 some day anyway. Good luck no matter what you do. What are you majoring in, and why? Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. Levin 0 #11 October 31, 2002 Quote 1)Stay in school 2)Take a quarter off to do the things I want to do 3)Drop out and move away and start living my life the way I want to live it i dropped out of school days after my second jump. for the next five years i worked a pointless job and skydived all the time. lots of fun. last year i decided that my wonderful, carefree lifestyle was getting me nowhere. i went back to school. only this time my head's screwed on right and my grades are great. only 1 1/2 yrs to go even though it's not a poll, i vote stay in school. if not you may be sorry later. levin, vSCS#
riddler 0 #12 October 31, 2002 I disagree. I went to school because I wanted to. Got a good paying job. Now I can afford skydiving and scuba diving around the world. I have an easy life. I don't need it to be ruined by these upstart young kids with degrees like mine. The fewer people with my education, the better for me. All you kids should drop out of college and let me keep my high-paying job. Seriously, if you hate it, you may not make it anyway - there's plenty of other kids that want it bad and will work harder than you to get it. School is a good deal and not going will screw you financially, but look at it this way. If you live your life the way you want, even if you end up poor and in the gutter, you only have yourself to blame. When you live your life doing what other people tell you and you hate it anyway, you just become bitter at everyone else. I honestly regret listening to my parents and doing everything they said to do. I don't regret school, but I never hated it either. Might sound too Disney, but if you work hard doing something you LIKE, you will eventually find success, and you'll probably have more fun. Of course, my advice would be to find a school and program you actually like, rather than drop out, but don't listen to me ...Trapped on the surface of a sphere. homer 0 #13 October 31, 2002 I do have a gambling license so I can go just about anywhere where there is a casino and work. I will just have to pay a butt load to have license transferred. It makes great money like a 1000 a week and I only work 4 days a week for 7 or 8 hours at a time. It's nice to work an hour and 20 or so then take a 20 minute break then do it all over again. Jessica 0 #14 October 31, 2002 I was in school for a year and a half and I was completely fucking it up. I dropped out (before they kicked me out) and worked in the billing department of an air conditioning supply company for eight months. I didn't do anything fun like skydiving -- I couldn't have afforded it. The next fall, I was sooooooooo ready to go back to school. I switched my major from something ridiculous to something I actually enjoyed, and ended up doing very well. If you've lost perspective, I advocate taking a little time off.Skydiving is for cool people only

clrarch 0 #17 October 31, 2002 I would stay in school---you'll be glad you got the degree when all is said and done. Pursuing a major that leads to a job/and or career you have a real interest in can make the experience much more rewarding. About eight years ago, I had a choice between going to grad school or deferring for two years to train for a spot on the US National Rowing team in hopes of making one of the women's boats for the 1996 summer Olympics. It was a tough decision, but I choose school and coached rowing while I was in school to stay involved with the sport. When I finished school and could support myself and pursue my interests on my own time and terms, I realized I had made the better choice.
moodyskydiver 0 #18 October 31, 2002 Stay in school.Trust me! After I did my first few jumps I dropped out of school and just worked a dead end job. I finally quit and went back to school. Its been really hard coming back and starting over.My parents promised they'd help me pay for my jumping if I'd stay in school. I go to school during the week and then make the 4hr round trip to my DZ on the weekends. I dont always get to do everything I want to( boogies trips etc) and I dont quite have the money for my own gear just yet but I still manage to have a good time. "...just an earthbound misfit, I." Craig 0 #20 October 31, 2002 It is now 6 years since I graduated HS and in the past 2 months I have seriously thought about going back to get a degree in Aviation (all the way through to commercial multi-engine instrument + CFI) I so wish I would have taken that route when I left HS since it (flying) has always been what I wanted to do. I dislike the idea of all the General Ed's but I would be involved in aviation courses as well all four years so I think it would be easier to handle. I guess to answer your question, do what YOU feel is right.
homer 0 #21 October 31, 2002 Thanks all for the advice I already knew the answer. Just was hoping someone would have given me the advice I wanted to hear. I know school is the thing even though I hate is as much as a 6 year old and his brussle sprouts. I still have a month before tuition is due so I will think about it. I may still take the winter quarter off and do some soul searching to find exactly what I want out of life and what I want to do with myself.
