Why beat-ups are risky....(Example Incl.)

Recommended Posts

This is a transcript from the Australian Herald Sun about what would "appear" to be a beat-up/fly-by:
Pilot survives crash
By Phillip Cullen, Christine Caulfield and Mark Buttler
October 31, 2002
RESCUERS worked frantically to free a pilot whose plane slammed into the
roof of a fish wholesalers at Barwon Heads airport yesterday.

Ambulance officers and CFA and SES volunteers donned breathing apparatus to rescue the pilot as 200 litres of aviation fuel poured out and the plane teetered in strong winds.
Experienced pilot Tim James, 27, spent more than two hours trapped in the wreckage of the single-engine Cessna after it slammed into a parachuting club, lost a wing and cartwheeled nose-first into a fish shop.
Ralph Hamilton-Presgrave, who was the first on the scene, said he was
talking to the pilot within a couple of minutes of the crash.
"He had no recollection of the events leading up to where he was," he said.
"As the plane was full of fuel, the emergency services had to ensure their
own safety by flooding the area with foam. He's a very, very lucky young
man."
Authorities said hundreds of people visited the airport on weekends and a
crash then could have been a "catastrophe".
The owner and retail manager of JLI Australia Seafoods were at the rear of the store when the roof caved in around them.
Owner Michael James, who is not related to the injured pilot, said he was
standing where the plane hit only 10 seconds before.
"We are so lucky there were not many people in the building. It is just
amazing. It just blew it apart," Mr James said.
"It just hit the roof. I was up there 10 seconds before the plane hit.
"I just smelt the (aviation) gas and got out of there."
Retail manager Chris Schepers said he heard the roar of an engine and saw the plane crash.
Mr Schepers, 21, suffered a cut requiring four stitches when he was hit on the head by falling debris.
"I hit the deck. I yelled out to see if Michael was all right but I couldn't
hear him and there was fuel pouring out everywhere," he said.
"From what everyone has told me, I'm surprised that I'm still here. If it
had been on a weekend . . . there are hundreds of people there."
Mr Schepers thanked a passing nurse, Robyn, for treating his injuries before ambulance officers arrived.
Insp Tim Attrill, of Geelong police, said the plane had taken off moments
before banking sharply to the left and crashing about 11am.
Rescuers helped Mr James into a cradle and winched him from the wreckage. He was flown by helicopter to the Alfred Hospital where he was last night in a stable condition.
He had suffered only a broken femur, possibly broken pelvis and lower leg
injuries.
"He was unlucky in the first instance that it happened but he was extremely lucky in the second instance to only have what appeared to be moderate injuries," said rural ambulance spokesman Terry Baulch.
Mr James had travelled to Victoria to pick up the Cessna to use it for a
major skydiving event in Goulburn next month.
The plane's owner John Ferrara said he was initially told Mr James had been killed and was deeply relieved to hear of his survival.
Mr Ferrara said Mr James was a fine pilot who would have done everything he could to minimise accident damage.
"He's the best pilot I've got. He's a good mate. I don't care about the
plane. You can't get another Tim," he said.
Mr Ferrara said the plane had a near-new engine with about 150 hours of
flying on the clock.
Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson said it would
investigate whether any aviation safety rules had been broken and hoped to speak to Mr James when he recovered. -Herald Sun

Agreed, I've been in planes doing beat-ups as we've left to fly home...That said, I know that it still just serves as another reminder that we need to think a little harder of the consequences of our, often crazy and incredibly stupid ;) behaviour.

So I raise the question: Should beat-ups be banned (or in this case, should the bans be enforced?).

A beat up is when the plane very low over head (100ft?ish) over builds/spectators... they may be potientially danderous but damn they look great!

I thought so from the context clues but I always ask. Anyway......Above spectators? How about below...once requested a "Kodak Pass" from an F-16 and I could see DOWN into the cockpit as he went by. I was standing in a 30 Ft tower...;) Yeah...they are dangerous though...ask Ozzy Osbourne!!!!

It appears that the plane crashed during climb-out after taking-off, not in performing a "beat up". It is not uncommon for airfields to feature glide paths over 'build up' areas.

I know you're from New Zealand and that things are done a little bit differently and all over there.

But exit height over here in Australia is just a little bit higher than the roof of the hanger....especially as Op Regs demand you be under canopy by 1800ft not 18 feet.....!:D:S

[ducking]

I thought Australia was part of New Zealand. Isn't that why they call it the West Island?

Maybe I'm confused. All those little tiny third world countries look the same from over here in the developed world.

beat-up, fly-by, buzz job, flat hat . . .

BTW, this is a VERY well known cause of accidents among pilots -- just showing off.

Yeah, I know of a case where the plane lost 12 inches off the wingtip when it touched the top bar of the mockup. Think about how that would happen. FAA doesn't have a sense of humor about some things.
