fudd 0 #87 October 30, 2002 Hi Sounds like a great ideaHowever, I don't think regional forums will make people post less to the talkback forum, but it will create a channel to reach skydivers in diffent regions. Could be very useful when traveling, and you want to get in touch with skydivers in some region. For that the talkback is close to useless. Danger is that it could develope into several talkback forums, which would not be that good... The nightmare would be when people start to crosspost to every region forum and talkback... There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

nacmacfeegle 0 #89 October 31, 2002 "I don't think nacmac is, needs or wants to be a yay-sayer! " Hmm trying to work out some way of disagreeing with this statement, its hurting my head.Right then, serious issues time..... I think I see what HH is trying to achieve here, and if I'm right, we all need to help him out, heres why... We need some way of futher reducing the clutter on the talkback forum. I think the number of users and the post topics have exceeded the usefulness of this particular board. What I mean is, over a thousand posts each day, and 40-50 new threads is getting kinda unwieldy, even for dedicated post whores like myself. This means that some valid, valuable, or even interesting posts () are simply getting lost in all the noise. Soo, thinking out loud here, so bear with me..... Maybe a forum for jokes, funny pictures etc.... How about a poll forum, I don't hold with polls, but if you must solicit opinions on what type of underwear Skymama should wear, what is the best type of beer etc, this would be this place.... Maybe a common 'vibe bucket', where a huge pile of vibes are posted along with pics of lucky four leafed clovers, budhas to rub, black cats crossing your path, etc. We need an agony aunt's corner, where you can post things like "I can't get a girlfriend, my neighbours dog won't stop barking, how do I make a decent cup of tea, my boss won't stop farting, and general woohoo I'm going on vacation" type drivel. It might be good to have an events area, where folks could describe up coming parties, whos going to Eloy, requests to car pool etc.... A political or topical issues arena, where we decide whether or not wars should be fought, which governments should be toppled, how best to stop global warming, and whether Rhino should run for Attorney general etc etc.. This would be the place to to chat in a reserved and civilised manner, while enjoying cultural interchanges, and developing opinions in a grown up and mature manner..... How about a newbies advice forum, where people could post those perennial problems, like how to cure acne, what is the best type of pullup to buy, what colour of freefly pants are the best, what knot do you use to tie your shoe laces etc. Maybe a geeks corner, wher techno babble is the chosen language. Of course, we need people to be disciplined and post in the relevant forum. These are just suggestions, perhaps the ball could roll and other folks might come up with even better sub headings for forums here..... Either way, I think we need to cut the noise down on the forum......But still maintain a sense of humour that keeps this place different from wreckdot..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. sangiro 26 #90 October 31, 2002 Nacmac, Thanks mate - there's some good stuff here! Thanks to everyone who've been posting and PM'ing me ideas and suggestions. Fudd is right, the problem is not creating new forums for new conversations (although that can be done if there's a need) the issue at hand is figuring out a way to prevent TalkBack from melting down. I'm in no rush - I'll apply my mind to all of these and do something. At this stage it's just a usability issue... the technology has no problem with the volume. Remster 30 #91 October 31, 2002 I'm not been the oldest poster on here (either through this ID or my androgenous one.. ), but I've been posting and lurking for a while still...and as far as I am concerned, the melt down happened a while ago.... there are a lot of interesting posts and discussions on talkback, but there's a lot more fluff (and I know some of the fluff is mine too lol). Even skimming the 1,200 post each AM, you still probably miss a few gems or important bit of news because of the shere volume of posts.... I wasnt too keen on the creation of the FF, RW and the other new forums, and I'm still not the biggest fan of the split. That being said, had to happen (DZ.com is a bit a victim of its own success) and maybe its the same with talkback... Remster

Scratch 0 #93 November 1, 2002 I have another suggestion. Why don't the people who get so much fun out of these forums at HH's expence I might add, kill two birds with one stone. We have used this facility to the point of breaking it and as a result it's usefulness is starting to rapidly degrade. The crux of the matter is that all of us (myself included) have been making use of and giving abuse to a really valuable and FREE resource. There are just too many people here now. Maybe it is time to start paying up. In the process we trim the numbers down a bit and people will be a little more circumspect in what they post. We will also help the man in red out a bit. Face it...we owe him. I suggest an annual subscription fee to these forums. Read for free but if you want to post then pay up. Lets say about 25$ per year. That is about the price of a jump, some beer and a few condoms. Surely less than the price of a day at the DZ and well worth it IMHO.

ernokaikkonen 0 #95 November 1, 2002 >I suggest an annual subscription fee to these forums. Read for free >but if you want to post then pay up. Lets say about 25$ per year. I think I'd be ready to pay, say, the price of a jump ticket per year. One problem would be that even though the money wouldn't be an issue for most people, the additional trouble of paying would be. And there are people who rarely post, but whose posts I'd like to keep seeing on the forums. People like Bill Booth at Gear and Rigging, and Brent Finley on the camera forum. Would these people pay the money? The biggest problem to me is that I have no way of paying. I have no credit cards. I would've ordered a DZcom t-shirt by now, but there's no practical way of paying for it.
