sangiro 26 #1 October 29, 2002 Heya all, The american, and non-american threads got me thinking again about something that narcimund suggested a while ago - regional forums. Do you guys think there's any reason or need to create regional forums? I can understand that there are sometimes discussions that are relevant to specific regions or countries only and this may be a home for those. It can also help contribute to building community within regions. Regions could be the same as in the Dropzone Database On the flip side it may be detrimental to the global community we have here. What are your thoughts? (Don't get too excited, it's not a democracy.... I'm just trying to be polite! )Safe swoops Sangiro
bluefingers 0 #2 October 29, 2002 non american/american thread arguments aside (done to death already), I like the way it is - personally, I've "met" all sorts of great people from all over the place. Regional forums might just be a tad insular ... Just my thoughts ... Kerry

wmw999 2,558 #6 October 29, 2002 Having a "regional announcements" forum might be good. Of course, there may already be one that I just haven't noticed yet, too.Wendy W. skymama 37 #8 October 29, 2002 No, keep it as one big happy family, with a few dysfunctional characters. You know who you are. prepheckt 0 #10 October 29, 2002 Hey sangrio, Did you get my PM? Reigonal forums would be cool, but wouldn't cliques form? How about a skysurfing forum, I'm interested in taking that up, but no forum exists."Dancing Argentine Tango is like doing calculus with your feet." -9 toes
happythoughts 0 #11 October 29, 2002 Absolutely not. One forum please. I would definitely miss the South Africans and the Finns. These guys are a hoot. (hoot is a good thing for the non-Southern among us).
Scratch 0 #12 October 29, 2002 You could give it a shot but I don't really see it working. There are too few of us outside of the US. The non-American thread is only over a thousand posts long. It has been going for a week. How does that compare to the daily post count in talk back. Not very well, it will get lonely there pretty quick and probably be a waste of your time. ernokaikkonen 0 #13 October 29, 2002 >I can understand that there are sometimes discussions that >are relevant to specific regions or countries only and this may >be a home for those. That's a valid point. I have very little use for info on US-boogies. On the other hand, such threads don't bother me the least in the Talkback forum. I'm afraid that if you create, what, six? seven? different regional forums, there will be very few messages on other than the North American one. What would be the definition of the regional forums? There would be of course the discussion and info on boogies and such. What else? >It can also help contribute to building community within regions. I think that could be detrimental to the global community. I do agree that talkback-forum has lately seen the birth of a community within community, but it's not regional, it's time-zoney. The regional communities have a tendency to form themselves in the traditional way, you know, in Real Life(tm). The best thing about DZcom is that it is a truly global community. I see no reason to change that.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #14 October 29, 2002 It definitely needs to be kept together. Splitting it would make it more difficult to cultivate and maintain the network of like-minded sophisticates I have grown so fond of. That, of course, makes it possible for me to travel all the world over and have "safehouses" wherever I might be. Having to wade through regional forums would only tie my online time up further. jessefs 0 #15 October 29, 2002 I like things the way they are here, it seems as though you are able to gather information and communicate just as well than if it were more "sectioned off" We wouldn't want to take away any chaos from the Talkback forum now would we?? meatmissile 0 #16 October 29, 2002 Keep it together. Anybody who wants to can start a regional thread the way it is now, and anybody can play (or not play) on it as they see fit. jraf 0 #17 October 29, 2002 Well the polling is your answer. You would have to create a forum for Americans, Australians, South Americans,Africans, Europeans, boat people, blacks, whites, gay and straight, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, vegetarians, meat eaters, meat missles, meat bombs, bomb squads and Zhills and many many more Keep it together!jraf Me Jungleman! TheBile 0 #19 October 29, 2002 One of the reasons I like this forum so much is because of it's international flavour. You would lose too much and gain too little (if anything) by regionalising it. DZ.com is a great site with a great forum. Don't change a thing buddy. Gerb I stir feelings in others they themselves don't understand. KA'CHOW ! nacmacfeegle 0 #20 October 29, 2002 Keep it together, for many good reasons listed above. We live in one world, further division would only encourage further cliques etc. Besides, you moderators have enough on your hands trying to keep the existing forums in order....-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. narcimund 0 #21 October 29, 2002 Well, the sentiment is strongly against it so far, but it sounds like the arguments aren't so much, "We don't want a regional forum" as "We don't want to lose the global one." I wonder if there's an implementation of regionality that doesn't isolate. Sure there is. Here's a simple idea I just came up with: Mix regional postings in with TalkBack. Only show each member regional postings from regions they select in their profile. Mark regional postings with a little flag of some sort. Now everyone would still be watching talkback and learning to speak Finnish and they ALSO get to post boring local stuff only to other locals. You know, here's the kind of new value you could have: * "Can anyone give me a ride to {local DZ} on Saturday?" * "Little local boogie coming up" * "Did anyone see my wallet in the loft?" * "Can someone take my packing/video/manifest shift next weekend?" These are the kind of postings that are utterly LOST in talkback, but could really help people, especially those of us who jump at small DZs. You guys at Perris and Deland own TalkBack and it'd be nice for the rest of us to have a way to talk to our locals as well. Also, TalkBack moves so fast these days that if a posting doesn't get continual replies, it moves off the first page and is therefore dead within hours. Local postings could be very valuable to locals even if they take a day or two to get responses. There. I made my pitch. Vote on.
