Would you object to paying a yearly $25 fee for using the forums?

Recommended Posts

Ok, folks. Scratch started this idea in another thread, and I've been pondering it for a few weeks. Sangiro has never asked for money, he's just left the option open to us to kick in a donation. I think that the time has come for us all to kick in a measly $25 for use of the forums. That's one jump and a couple beers.

I think you all would agree with me that the site is a big part of our lives. It keeps us informed, provides entertainment, and has fostered new friendships and relationships. I myself have one of my most cherished friends from the site (you know who you are ;)) It's time to stop being just a taker, we need to be givers now. We are actually fortunate that Sangiro has had a lot of idle time because of his visa problems. Look at all the improvements he has been making to the site, and for what? To make it better and more useful for US!

I'm sure the amount of money he dumps into running the site runs close to what most of us pay for rent. And, there is no price we can put on the amount of time that he spends on the site. Look at the "who's online" page a few times a day. His name is most often there. Paypal has been up for a long time, and I'm as guilty as anyone else by saying, "oh, I'll do that tomorrow" and then tomorrow never came. I'll be doing it today. And, I don't even know how it works!:P

If you say yes to the poll, let's think of the best way it can be instituted. Should we let new users have a certain number of posts before they have to kick in, say 50? Should it start on a specific day, like Jan. 1, 2003 (gives you time to save up, and mail it in if you don't use credit cards). I know the sneaky ones here could always keep logging on under new names after 50 posts. But, that would be a really low-class thing to do, and it would defeat the purpose of you being a part of the community.

nope.... never (can I be clearer?). Heck, I've never even paid for any porn site either (back in my youth, usenet wasnt filled with spam lol)..... as far as I am concerned, asking me for $ to access a site is a 100% sure way of making sure that I will not visit that site again.

and if you ask me, it would pretty much manage to kill the site.

Skymama,

This is actually a little confusing to some people. Your use of the negative in the question would mean that "No" votes would be the ones wanting to institute the change. As in, "No, I don't object to giving Sangiro some cash." It could be confused with, "No, I don't want to give him any money because I am an ungrateful moocher", for example. ;)

I think it should remain voluntary, with occasional reminders like the one you posted.

I evaluated my own usage and decided that I did value the service he provides. So, while not obligatory, I did step up and PayPal him $25 just now. Who is going to step up next?

I would pay if we needed to but I donated last year and plan to again this year. I hoped more then just a few of us would do that!
lets all get on the ball make asome kinda virtual donation boogie....lets say maybe in his b-day month we should all donate?( yea how fukn hard would that be to co-ordinate)

but maybe we should all pass a few (I was gonna say DOLLARS) monetary units his way!
I donate the price of a jump ticket and a beer to some people on a regular occasion. and last year I hit a few at once. I would love to think that that was easy enough to do for our engineer!

lets help keep this a voluntary website and donate some $$ if you can! TODAY!;)

Justin, I see your point. I was running off to get to class and didn't think it through. So, I guess the poll is going to be useless. But, I would still like everyone to post their thoughts.

I'd prefer to pay US$0.05 or 0.10 per posting. Micropayments are easier to swallow and more in keeping with the culture of the internet. They're less likely to turn anyone away and might improve the overall quality of the conversations.

Besides, an annual "membership fee" would give people a feeling they had ongoing rights without responsibilities. ("I paid my $25 so I can post all the drivel I want to!") That would diminish the conversation even further than it's already gone.

Now if only some clever entrepenuer would devise a good accessible micropayment system!

Keeping up with pay per posting would be a nightmare for all of us and especially HH. How about giving paying members something extra...say a $25 discount coupon off their next equipment or whatever purchase...That way it didn't really cost the member anything and the sponsers get the extra sale!

Blue skies,

Jim

Not really. Just design a system that automatically subtracts the fee from your "posting-balance" after every post. Not that I'd like a mandatory payment system. I said it in a different thread already, but for example I haven't bought a DZcom t-shirt only because I have no way of paying for it(no credit cards).

Remember there are people from all around the world here. I'd have little use for, say, Square1 coupons...

If I don't say the name, then I can boost everyone's self-esteem by you hoping that you are "the one"! :P lol

Now that I've been lurking/posting here for almost a year, yes I'd pay for access. BUT I would never have signed on in the first place, if there had been a fee.

Also, would it be possible to seperate the registered users who do use the forums regularly from the people who only ever use the classifieds and read the occasional article? The gal I bought my gear from never - as far as I'm aware - used the forums, but I'm sure glad she had access to the ads! If there was a fee, a lot of the variety and breadth of input to the site would be lost.

The fee I was suggesting is only for the forums use. The rest of the site would be totally free, and you can read the forums also. BUT, if you want to post to the forums, then I was suggesting enacting the fee. Plus, I added that it be started after say, 50 posts. That way, someone could get used to the idea if they even liked posting or not. Believe it or not, there are some people who can live without it (freaks!).:P
