SpeedRacer 1 #1 November 1, 2002 We had an interesting discussion on the "Vultures" thread put up by Skreamer re. the possible war vs. Iraq, the dubious Al Quaeda- Saddam Hussein connection, greedy oil companies, etc. Check out this article by Salman Rushdie: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49220-2002Oct31.html Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

FallRate 0 #5 November 3, 2002 Salmon Rushdie is Indian. Oops, almost made a one-liner. Salmon Rushdie was born in India but lived for large part of his life in England, where I believe he still resides, but could definitely be wrong about that. He is Islamic, and his book The Satanic Verses caused the Ayotollah (of Iran) to put a price on his head as it was considered an insulting depiction of Muhommed, or something like that. Iflyme 0 #7 November 4, 2002 Mr Rushdie did a reading at a book store just a few kilometres from me the other day -- sorry I missed it! The more perspectives we get, the better equipped we are to make our decisions about things.
nacmacfeegle 0 #8 November 4, 2002 "This is, of course, the argument based on his 31/2-decade-long assault on the Iraqi people. He has impoverished them, murdered them, gassed and tortured them, sent them off to die by the tens of thousands in futile wars, repressed them, gagged them, bludgeoned them and then murdered them some more." And that was just part of his recent re-election campaign...So what is so different here from say China/Tibet, Rwanda, etc etc etc....And why therefore has it taken 35 years of abuse to bring about some sort of reaction from the West? Perhaps the UN needs to look a bit more closely at our policy of non-interference in domestic affairs..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
