PhreeZone 20 #26 November 2, 2002 The Checkpoint devices I'm refering to are the appliances that they sell. I knew that they made the software firewalls too, but the appliances that they sell are hardware level routers. I've never got to play with the windows version, but the appliance based I've played with is a regular router with their packet filter slapped on top. Nice set up. I actually want to snag one from ebay to learn more about it. >Specifically what 'average homebuilt software' are you referring to? Zonealarm, etc.. The firewalls that most people think will protect them from hackers at home. >There aren't any bug-traq listings against them because they're new. Given time flaws and exploits will be discovered in ANY software application True, but since they've been around since 1994.. I'm thinking they have had some time to pound into them. The systems are still running the 6.5 core of BSD so while its not the most up to date system... it does it job.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
christoofar 0 #27 November 2, 2002 Quote I'm a Unix guy, I rarely invest any time in the latest Windows this or Windows that or new and exciting ways to spam people through Windows. That said, I was a bit surprised when I came home and saw this (see attachment) - anyone know how this got in? Thanks much, Jim Jimbo: You want to go disable your messenger and your Alerter services in the control panel for your system. Also you need to install filtering to keep incoming UDP and TCP ports closed so you don't get them again from untrusted sources. ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! PhillyKev 0 #28 November 3, 2002 Quotethe appliances that they sell are hardware level routers What is a hardware level router? Unless you're talking about a passive hub (which doesn't route) then there's some kind of software running on that hardware to perform the inspection of the packets, determine the route, send and receive updates, etc. Hardware is hardware (e.g. silicon, wires, copper, metal, etc.) and is completely useless without software running on it. I think you are trying to differentiate between firwall software that runs on Wintel or li/u-nix based systems vs. a proprietary IOS. But either way they are both software and thus vulnerable to software based exploits. Think about it, IOS = Integrated Operating System = Software. I do know that when I delete the spy programs ad-aware finds i have to re-install kazaa. probably not a problem for you. Just trying to clear up some misinformation... Ad-Aware will not stop these messages. The ability to receive them is built into Windows. You can shut it off, as detailed in a previous post. The reason that Kazaa breaks when you run Ad-Aware is that it Kazaa is full of spyware. By reinstalling it you are just undoing everything that Ad-Aware fixed. Try Kazaa Lite instead. Jimbo 0 #31 November 3, 2002 QuoteTry Kazaa Lite instead. Be careful with Kazaa Lite and Ad-Aware as well. Kazaa Lite contains a dll that looks to Ad-Aware to be spyware, but it isn't. Just be sure to RTFM and you'll be fine. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
