billvon 3,120 #1 November 4, 2002 . . . the Ohio GOP, who ran an ad showing the wreckage of the twin towers to try to bash opponent Tim Ryan. Using the deaths of 3000 people to make political hay is about as low as you can get in my book.

PhreeZone 20 #4 November 4, 2002 Oh... not quite as good, but funny.. the Ohio GOP is running ads about silly lawsuits (it says on screen "actual lawsuit") that 2 minutes on snopes.com would have debunked. The Towers footage is so poorly done you are left wondering if the other parties did'nt all chip in and offer to pay for it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Using the deaths of 3000 people to make political hay is about as low as you can get in my book. That's another reason I'll never vote again. It's not enough anymore to campaign upon one's own merits. It's now necessarily to portray your opponent as a child molester / old-lady starver / racist / bigot / homophobe, etc., etc., etc. The whole attack-dog campaign process is disgusting, and anybody who wants to get involved in it (i.e., run for office) is either hopelessly naive, brutally ambitious, or just plain stupid. billvon 3,120 #6 November 4, 2002 >They're all pretty bad. Who gets the most tasteful award? I saw an ad for lieutenant governor here (Bustamante) that just showed his picture, listed what he's done and what his platform was. Not a single attack on his opposition, no negative stuff about the other party. I think I'm voting for him on that alone. Nice to see someone is above the mudslinging. AggieDave 6 #7 November 4, 2002 Although I personally know Rick Perry (gov of Texas) and really like the guy and will support him tomorrow, the Texas gov race got really really nasty this year, both sides are to blame though, both let themselves fall to it. Then again, nasty mud slinging campaigns is a bit of an expection in Texas half the time, well, I guess that's true for any politics in the south.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #10 November 4, 2002 We had this discussion a while back, my thoughts are that the he did it was in bad taste, making an advertisement out of it. Am I making sense or is my lack of sleep getting the best of me?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Although to compare the two of them, the Cummings ad did show the intact WTC, which to me isn't as bad as showing the wreckage and implying that your opponent is somehow partly to blame for such things. Yes, why can't the GOP show the care and compassion that the Democrats displayed at Sen. Paul Wellstone's Barbecue, Gala, Political Rally, and Memorial? Is capitalizing on the death of one more palatable?Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
nacmacfeegle 0 #13 November 5, 2002 This aspect of American campaign politics has always fascinated me. Here in eth UK candidates are elected because of their proposed manifestos, and strengths, not because the opposition is inadequate, or weak. But the US way is certainly more entertaining to watch...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. skymedic 0 #14 November 5, 2002 and the other most tasteless Ad I saw yesterday was an ad for Lisa Madigan.....she tryed to link her opponent (a republican) to the sniper shootings in maryland....typical chicago/illinois politics... (sigh) No, this was not a bash democrats or bash republican thread. Both parties can be slimy; the twin towers thing is about the slimiest thing I've seen in a while. The political grandstanding at Wellstone's funeral came in a close second though.
