bwilling 0 #2 November 5, 2002 Ha! Congrats! Taking a welcome break from the evil empire of Microshaft, are we? What distro of Linux would you be running now? I have Mandrake 9.0 running as my primary OS these days, but I can still dual boot into the MS virus... er I mean OS ... if I need to (I still have a couple of work apps that I have to run, that only run on a MS OS). Overall, I like Linux, and it just keeps getting better and better... "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got." Guest #3 November 5, 2002 QuoteHa! this is my first post to DZ.com using linux. I just set up my Linux box yesterday and being quite proficiant with most microsoft products I feel like a little lost chickling. wild! .:skip Good on ya! Linux is a whole lot easier to install, set up and run than it was when I started with it in Jan 1999 with Red Hat 4.2! I've played with a few distros since then and learned a lot. My faves are Mandrake and Suse (dual-booting Mandrake 7.2 on my Dell PII laptop - YOWZA!) If I had broadband I'd use Linux exclusively, but I'm still working out issues like accelerated video support, etc. in Suse 8.3. It would also be tres handy to be able to run Win apps in Linux without having to jump through a lot of hoops first (e.g., the wine.conf file has always confused me, and I don't think of myself as illiterate [CNE 4.11, NT MCSE, A+, etc.]). When Win apps can be run out of the box on a Linux machine, M$FT's days are officially numbered, because users won't need their OS to run third-party products. Namibia has recently joined the list of countries to go open-source instead of M$FT. They join Iceland, Korea, Japan, Italy and others, who are just saying "Ix-Nay" to Microsoft's scandalous licensing schemes. Many IT pros are sick of dealing with all the red tape and fine print and "per server" and "per seat", and you can do this, but you can't do that, and the neverending fear of being caught red-handed with an insufficient number of licenses...I could go on and on. I personally am sick of the upgrade merry-go-round, where hardware is obsolete before it's out the factory door, and M$FT's products demanding more and more computing power just to run. Granted, Linux can be a hog too, but at least it can be tweaked so that it's not burning up cycles with stuff you don't need or want."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." Sonic 0 #4 November 5, 2002 I thought there was a popular program for linux that allows you to run Windows from within linux itself?----------------------------------- It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone

skyblade 0 #6 November 5, 2002 Yea, actually there are a coupleof them out there, I'm using vmware, but I also know about wine. Vmware has seen a lot of development lately, runs very stable, and it is relatively easy to set up. You can download the whole thing (uncrippled) for free and get a 30 day evaluation license for it if you want to give it a shot. The only drawback is that it needs a reasonably fast machine with lots of memory, since windoze eats up a lot of resources, even when idle. Guest #7 November 5, 2002 QuoteI thought there was a popular program for linux that allows you to run Windows from within linux itself? You may be referring to Lindows, but their pricing / licensing scheme makes me choke."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." Jaco That's why I don't think emulation is the way to go - it means running a Win Virtual Machine (with its OWN virtual machines) within another OS. Creating an artificial environment and then passing and translating instructions BOTH WAYS into and out of the emulation shell will kill even the mightiest PC. Not sure how Lindows does it, but it strikes me that this is someone who has taken open source, changed it, and made it proprietary (I may be wrong, but I don't think the Lindows source code is available). Steve Jobs did the same thing with OS X. That's counter to the open-source concept."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." skyblade 0 #11 November 5, 2002 I agree, The only reason why I bother with vmware is because KOffice support for reading and editing microsoft documents is not perfect yet. But I expect that to change real soon at the rate they are working at it. KDE should give m$ a real run for its money once they attain equal functionality. Ripping off ideas and even blatantly stealing code from the opensource community is nothing new. Some companies (and I dont even need to name them) have a large legal staff and budget set aside exactly for this activity. But things are changing, and the next few years are going to be very interesting to watch. Jaco >Anything worth doing requires a helmet<

I've imported MS Word 97 .doc files, Excel .xls files, etc. into Star Office 6.0, and they worked perfectly."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." billvon 3,120 #13 November 5, 2002 >Ha! this is my first post to DZ.com using linux. Oh, I thought there was some new beer called linux beer. I imagined a box you'd get that contained the hops, malt, etc with instructions on brewing that had been added to by everyone who had used it previously. Then there's windows beer, that comes in pre-refrigerated insulated coolers, ready to drink. Usually it's pretty good, but sometimes you find a dead animal in your beer - and you never know which one it's gonna be.
