Women are genetically less prone to Geekiness

Recommended Posts

Yep, I think a lot of male-female behavior has its roots in evolutionary behavior. We've evolved a lot of basic behaviors throughout the centuries that let us take care of very basic needs (like the instinct to avoid falls, to duck/flinch when something comes at your head) and it only makes sense that some higher drives might be encoded in our genes as well.

For example, it is greatly to a woman's evolutionary advantage if she has several kids and have them all survive. Her body limits how many she can have - in pre-civilization, a woman might be limited to 6-7 children during her life in terms of how many she could safely bear, nurse and care for. (This is back when average lifespans were 30-35 years.)

A man, on the other hand, gets the evolutionary upper hand if he has hundreds of children and only 20% survive - and because he doesn't have to carry or nurse the kids he can do this. So male genetic behavior might be expected to nudge him towards having sex with as many women as possible, while female genetic behavior might be expected to make women want to find a single strong male 'protector' and remain exclusively with him.

The study above supports that to some degree. A woman who is socially inept may not be able to 'hang on' to a protector. And although it's a sad commentary on human behavior in pre-civilized time, even being a geek wouldn't stop a man from forcing sex on a woman.

All this time I thought the fart jokes were my fault! Finally a biological basis for my stunted sense of humor. I am so relieved, err about to be Fpfpfpfpfpfpf!

You are making a grave mistake if you think you can derive a moral "ought" from a factual "is". Even the atheist philosopher David Hume didn't think so--in fact he is known for what I just said.

Just because someone has a natural tendency to get so angry that they want to kill someone doesn't justify the killing. Heck, children have natural tendencies to do all kinds of things that we consider wrong--like stealing. It is only with good parental guidance that they learn how to best properly behave.

Also, I find it amusing how evolutionary psychology can be used to explain anything and everything. Man cheats on his wife? Oh that's evolutionarily advantageous because he's gotta get his genes out there. Man doesn't cheat on his wife? Oh that's evolutionarily advantageous because then the man can insure stability and focus his resources to insure that the children he does have make it to adulthood.

You get the idea. There are better examples than that but it's often used in the same way.

This study may provide a genetic answer for why women can't understand fart humor or the 3 stooges. Don't worry ladies, no need to apologize. ;) We understand now.

See who did the study?

"Dr Ruth Campbell of University College London, UK, says..."

Another study by Dr. Ruth, huh?

Why did that short chick ever know so much about sex anyway? How about a sex talk show starring Pam Lee? Skanky chicks would have much better info than the short German woman.
