Rookeskydiver 0 #1 November 6, 2002 i was just wondering if there were any poor college skydivers out there who choose to starve themsleves just so they can afford to jump every weekend? As for me, i've been living of top ramen and cup of noodles this past year just so i can afford to jump twice a week. Thats 80 dollars a week (40 per jump). can anyone out there relate to me? konradptr 0 #3 November 6, 2002 I'm in grad school, again, and trying not to spend any money other than what I need to so I can not have to worry about the important things, like jumps and jump money... ------------------------------------------ Getting banned isn't that bad...... flypunk 0 #4 November 6, 2002 sure dude.. I started out just like that now, I have my own gear and jump somewhat regularly.... plastic the way of the world. Get one max it out ... and so on... It just goes on skydiving will own you... and that is not a bad thing. Any and every expense you have will be thought in terms of jumptickets from now on, you'll see. floormonkey 0 #5 November 6, 2002 Friend of mine (actually the new packer I just finished training) rear-ended my car while headed to a non-DZ job. Used the insurance money to buy first rig and canopy. Moved out of my house into a RV so I could jump more. Now I live the simple life, but I live the dream. Lolie 0 #7 November 6, 2002 Too funny! I was on here posting, but I had to get off to go make dinner: ramen noodles! That's all I eat. I, too, am a starving college student with a crappy job and a skydiving obsession. And I still can't afford to jump every weekend. I just sold my anthro textbook back for two dollars so I could buy myself a Subway sandwich. Sad. Anyone wanna donate to the starving, skydiving, underemployed, college student fund? Anyone...? moodyskydiver 0 #8 November 6, 2002 Yep! I'm at a subsidy of TX A&M right now. A combination of bad weather, no $$ and a hurt knee has kept me on the ground for several weeks now. I've met numerous jumpers who are suffering through college and trying to scrape up jump $. I'm thankful that my parents help me with my jump $ under the condition that I don't drop out and actually try for descent grades. I asked that they help me get to Eloy and save for gear rather than buy me Christmas gifts.I guess I'm better off than some since my parents are so cool about my jumping. Heh! I just used half of my Pell grant refund check to buy an altimeter. The other half is getting saved for either A) my Eloy trip, or B) a helmet. "...just an earthbound misfit, I." FallingILweenie 0 #9 November 6, 2002 While at Illinois I lost weight for the ability to jump. I'd spend about 50 bucks a month on food and use the rest of the stipend i got from the parents for food for jumps.
hawkbit 0 #10 November 6, 2002 It should be noted that the nutritional value of Ramen is not the best... I heard of someone getting scurvy from only eating that stuff... so be sure to get some vitamins to take . Mac and Cheese was always a good cheap meal too! Don't forget that bread and bologna can go a long ways for pretty cheap. freakshow 0 #11 November 6, 2002 Yep. Shorted my land lord $50 this month guess where that's going. I've more then once traded being able to buy more then ramen to be able to jump. Got a credit card it's maxed imagen that. They tell me schools worth the money though but it's hard when you think of your tuition check as how many jumps you could buy. B.L. Sunshine, what have you been up to girl? Isn't it way past your bed time? I know it's past mine and I'm likely 2 hours behind you in time zones. I was playing a late hockey game and am still wired, but I haven't been drinking. That's for tomorrow night (before and after my volleyball match). As far as this thread is concerned, I'm not like most of you who have responded. I work (it pays well but I'm tired of it) and I've been lucky enough to be able to afford paying for my jumps, a rig and miscellaneous gear. But my Eloy trip at Christmas will likely put a huge dent in my bank account. But then I'm hoping to jump 50+ times in 10 days. Well I won't ask what you've been up to (though I have my suspicions). But I can only guess what you'll be like in 3 1/2 hours. I have 5 hours before it's time for work and I think it's time for me to sign off now. G'nite y'all (said in my best southern drawl accent). PLFXpert 0 #17 November 6, 2002 QuoteAs for me, i've been living of top ramen and cup of noodles this past year just so i can afford to jump twice a week. Thats 80 dollars a week (40 per jump). This is the typical college student regime, skydiver or not. Usually the $80 goes to beer. As for me, a full-time college student w/ a part time job, I can relate. I love eating food straight from the can, but Chef Boy-ar-Billy likes to make things fresh, so we have a bit more variety than Top Raman, but we still cut back. PLFXpert 0 #18 November 6, 2002 ***I guess I'm better off than some since my parents are so cool about my jumping.*** My parents are cool about it. They don't help out w/ $$$ but, b/c they travel so much, they bought a house near the DZ so they could at least see me for an hour or so on the weekend and now I have a place to shower or stay if I want when they're gone. They also bought me a full-faced helmet for Christmas last year. They viewed it as contributing to my safety, not my habit, but I returned it and used the $$$ for more jumps. I thought I wanted one for the winter but I felt SO claustraphobic in that thing. I love feeling the wind on my face. I absolutely went bazerk when I put that helmet on and it pressed against my cheeks and...UGH...not cool. I like my Gath w/ my dytter and sticker that reads, "Girls Kick Ass." I love seeing pictures from behind of me in freefall where you can read the sticker on my helmet. Too cool;-) Speaking of stickers...I thought of a great one, if they'd only make it, to put on my skydiving helmet. It would read, "How's my flying? Call 1-800-Freefly"
happythoughts 0 #19 November 6, 2002 Haven't been in college in a while. Never starved. I always had a good full-time job, even while attending 15-hours of classes. I did mainly construction jobs during the day and attending night classes. I made excellent money, the exercise on the job was ok, and I spent it all on sports cars and honeys. I found that everyone has a certain amount of free time. A part-time job just cuts into the "Whadda ya wanna do now?" boring time. You don't sit around and you have some cash. PLFXpert 0 #20 November 6, 2002 Well said, Bill...I couldn't agree more. I, too, take 15 hours (grad in December!!!) and work 20 hours a week, mostly mornings or afternoons. My days last b/w 7 a.m. and 5 or 9 p.m. most days. I bust my ass so I dont' have shit to do on the weekends but jump and relax, and maybe do the grocery shopping. pop 0 #24 November 6, 2002 It's very nice meeting you Rookeskydiver. I am one of those poor college students that somehow manages to get a jump or two or five in here and there. Sometimes that involves passing up on going to bars with your buddies. And its tough when you have no money. We should do Poor College Student Skydiver (PCSS)#'s. You take number 1. AggieDave take #2, and I'll take #37 ounce wonders, music and dogs that are not into beer
