jraf 0 #1 November 8, 2002 Dear Head Administrator: Too much regulation. You have shut down "The Non Americans" one of the best threads that could have happened to this forum. People from all over the world sharing their thoughts and breaking morning bread with each other. This was not a chat room. This was a place for friends to meet. Jumping from other posts , commenting our daily life or other absurdities. According to what you said to Kerry, you will now have to censor all threads making sure that we are not lurking somewhere. I think you will find yourself shutting down more and more threads. You have set the forum rules yourself. As far as I am concerned we broke none of your rules in the thread. If you intend to enforce more rules, please post them beforehand. You said the forums were moderated and not censored. You just muzzled us. Censorship is bad! PhillyKev 0 #7 November 8, 2002 Nothing was censored. He didn't delete any posts or tell you to stop talking about being non-american. Just to stop the lengthy thread.
nacmacfeegle 0 #8 November 8, 2002 Hey there Jraf, this is in response to your post, but isn't necessarily directed to you, so don't take it personally. I enjoyed that thread just as much as everyone else did. I was as guilty as everyone else involved in the daily post whoring, and probably did a lot to encourage keeping the thing going. Often I thought the thread was actually destructive to the international nature of the chatting, especially given the international political situation right now. I even asked if the thread title could somehow be changed to appear less divisive. It was fun to remind the forum that it is not just populated by Americans, especially at the times when we were posting here, but we tried very hard not to use this thread as a Yank bashing vehicle, as I'm sure Quatorze, and Lisa will confirm. This thread became a place where we could all find each other of a morning when the board was quiet, and DID develop into what could be likened to a chat room, many one liners, conversations spiralling around the place endless sentences etc etc. In a way I'm sad but not outraged that the thread was shut down, but in a way I'm relieved. This thread was starting to spark off an attitude of 'who can get the biggest thread going' which ultimately encouraged post whoring. So I understand why it was stopped, along with the associated 'american thread' thing. Good things to come from this experience, well I've chatted (yes we WERE just chatting) with some people I might not otherwise have gotten to know quite so well. I've made some on-line friends, yourself included, I've learned the Afrikaan for millipede, I know what a zulu spear looks like, I've seen Hamliinaa decked in snow, I learned the Finnish for rhubarb pie, and I have laughed a lot. Bad things, we pissed off HH and got the fork for our troubles. But lets be realistic, and honestly admit we were chatting, not necessarily about skydiving either. In fact we were rarely chatting about skydiving at all. I think there were more posts about 'extreme bagel munching' than actual jumping. This sets a pretty poor example to anyone who might see this type of thread and then post whore in the same manner. Void was a case in point. So we got the Hot Fork, big deal, if you can't take the prong, don't do the wrong....Even though we didn't break any rules, we did go beyond the spirit of this place, and as no doubt somebody will point out, this is HH's place and he is entitled to do as he pleases.... So HH I humbly aplogise for wanton abuse of your bandwidth and hope the case of beer I pay pal'd you makes up for any minor indiscretions.... Peace, I see a ray of unified sunshine dispelling the clouds of division.....recent Chinese proverb.... Cya back on the forums to continue enjoying lively debate and cultural interchange. skybytch 273 #13 November 8, 2002 Actually, I'm "firmly standing in defense" of the fact that Sangiro pays for this site out of his own pocket. Do you have any idea how much work, time and money he's dumped into dropzone.com? Since he's nice enough to spend his own money and free time to provide us this place, if he decides something has gone on long enough - for whatever reason, even if it's just because he didn't get any last night and he's pissy - then, yes, I'm going to stand behind him. Even if I wasn't green.

jraf 0 #15 November 8, 2002 Somehow I feel no compassion. A man should live the consequences of his deeds. Someone has put this site on the most public place in the world - the web. He put it for public use. When I entered it there was no WARNING or POSTED sign. I was not informed that someone paid for it and I don't think I care. If he did not feel like spending money, he should not made this web site public. If he feels he can't afford it make it a paid access site. Live with the consequences of your deeds and don't whine about it. Adieu Lisa, adieu...jraf Me Jungleman! Me have large Babalui. Muff #3275
PLFXpert 0 #16 November 8, 2002 OMG...way to show gratitude to someone who has provided us all w/ a great place to meet other jumpers and if anything, something fun for me to do rather than go bored out of my mind at work. I usually don't get involved in the drama, but I think you were WAY out of line, there, Jraf. But, I suppose you are entitled to your opinion... I just want to say, for the record, I DEFINITELY don't agree w/ you on this one.

ernokaikkonen 0 #18 November 8, 2002 Well damn! I was going to post what I had to say about this but Nacmac pretty much said it all.It was fun while it lasted, but Sangiro calls the shots on his site. I'll just have to find something worthwhile to say before I post now... And, like I said in another thread, I might setup a chat/forum/whatever to one of the sites I have access to, so we don't have to start working through our workdays.Erno P.S. >I think there were more posts about 'extreme bagel munching' >than actual jumping. skymama 37 #19 November 8, 2002 The forum rules ARE a warning sign, but you do have to actually read them to know. As nacmac pointed it, the non-american thread had gotten to be just a bunch of post whoring, and the subject matter really only pertained to the ones involved. You're not paying for the site, you really don't have a say in the matter. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
skybytch 273 #20 November 8, 2002 Quote Live with the consequences of your deeds and don't whine about it. Excellent advice. I hope you don't just say it, but also follow it. Because after all, with a few clicks of a mouse, he can a) block your username and/or IP address from posting in this forum, b) block your username and/or IP address from posting on any of these forums and/or c) remove the forums from his website. I just hope that your words don't screw the rest of us out of a cool place to hang out.

PhillyKev 0 #22 November 8, 2002 Wow...that's the most unappreciative thing I've ever heard. Some people have to realize that even though the embodiment of the internet itself may currently be a free and open medium for connecting to linked resources, that doesn't mean all of those resources need to be. PhreeZone 20 #24 November 8, 2002 What would you perfer? A) Moderation and following the guidelines and online rules and feelings of a site op while he tries his best to run a free site or B) A Free site that throws Pop up adds at you on every page you load just so you can waste bandwidth? I like A a whole lot myself.. Back in the old 14.4 modem days mindless chatter had to happen real time (ie IRC) since loading webpages to see "Lol... funny" took to long and pissed too many people off. I think that if the bandwidth was throttled on here most people would go ballistic. You know what... Rec.skydiving is free and they could care less what you chat about there.... if you need help finding your way to it just ask, plently of people can point you to it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
