AggieDave 6 #1 November 8, 2002 Well, as everyone here probably already knows, I finally recieved my Aggie Ring yesterday. The Aggie Ring is more then your average school ring, its your calling card for acceptance in the Aggie family when your finally out of school. A little history, the Aggie Ring as we know it today has been this same design since 1894, there are only small variations to the ring. Variations such as putting a diamond in the shield and choosing if you want 14kt or 10kt, antiquing or not, but that is ALL the variations, although your name is inscribed inside the ring. There are stories of rings making it back to their owners after 30 years of seperation (happened to a few Aggies who fought in WWII and lost their rings in battle). Basically, the Aggie Ring is a very big deal to anyone who went to Texas A&M Univeristy. Now, the fun part, the ring dunking. Tradition states that you earn the right to wear your ring by dunking it in a pitcher of beer, trying to drink to your ring out of the pitcher in as many seconds as your class year. For example, I'm class of 2002 so I try to drink it in 102 seconds. You catch the ring in your teeth and you have earned your ring. For this special occasion, I purchased a nice glass pitcher engraved with the A&M logo. Also, this pitcher happened to be a 64oz pitcher instead of the 40-ish oz pitchers normally used at bars. I dropped my ring in and went at it. Although I am an avid beer drinker, I'm not good at drinking beer fast, so I did have to pause about half way through to catch my breath, then I finished up strong. It took 130 seconds, so I didn't get it in time, but I still did it (and I'd like to see one of yall drink 64oz of beer in under 130 seconds ). After a minute or so, I did see some of the beer again, though hehe. All in all, it was an absolute blast. About 30 friends or so came out to the Dixie Chicken to watch me dunk my ring and it was great to hear them cheering me on and enjoying the evening. Here are some pictures, they're all pretty much self explanitory and they are named with a number of their chronological order. Although I'm probably going to have to break the pics between a few posts, here's a list of explaination: 1. I'm about to drop my ring into the pitcher 2. And it begins, I begin dunking 3. Still going 4. Gotta take a quick breath 5. Shit, there's still a lot left 6. Gotta finish, still going 7. Almost there, gotta keep going 8. Almost there, just one more sip 9. Got my ring back! 10. Got my beer back, too 11. Second time I got my beer back 12. And I'm done (notice pitcher in hand, ewwww) 13. A shot of my roommates and a few friends, my Corps buddies had already gone back inside to play dominos and some had left (this was a bit later in the night) 14. This is a shot of some of my Corps buddies showing a great example of the dixie chicken. Drinking beer, playing 42 and enjoying the night. Enjoy the pics. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

NewGuy 0 #15 November 9, 2002 Hey AggieDave, looks like a great time. Also, looks like I'm the only one that doesn't have a clue of what an Aggie ring signifies. Sounds quite significant, and a major accomplishment, but I don't have any idea of what it is for. Could you fill me in? Cheers, NewGuy
Kris 0 #16 November 9, 2002 Daveman! Big WHOOP to ya! Even if I did go to OU. Just don't tell anyone I told you "WHOOP!" And BTW, if you go drinking w/ me, Pablo & Amber next weekend, you are not allowed to have more than 40oz of beer at one sitting. Especially if you're sitting across from me.Kris Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
AggieDave 6 #17 November 9, 2002 Thanks for the replies everyone, it was definately fun! Well, some answers to the questions: No I won't hook you up, they're all dating someone. Yes I will participate in a drinking contest at Eloy, I was hoping to. Read the original post to understand the Aggie Ring, basically it's the "secret handshake" to the Aggie family after college. Basically the Aggie Family is very very strong and people have been hired before only because they were Aggies. Am I a typical Aggie, well I guess, I was in the Corps, I love A&M, I love Aggie Bonfire and built 2 Aggie Bonfires, I participate in all the traditions, I love Aggie Football...I just love A&M. Yeah, so what if I'm brainwashed. Did I leave anything out? --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Zlew 0 #18 November 9, 2002 Congrats man, and now worries on the spewing. This summer the group I worked with had a tradition of drinking a pitcher in less than 3 mins when it was your first time to work a camp at that location. The guys who did it....some were big dudes (I'd say range from 180lbs- to one over 300). At every camp I went to only about 1 in 5 didn't barff. Stomach just isn't big enough. We always had a 50 gal. trash can right there..... thank god for that. I think the record was set this year at 32 seconds (and not a drop spilled or "given back"). Semper Fi and Happy B-Day (a bit premature for you, but your heart is in the right place). Thats a lot of good stuff all at once. Soak it in.
