freebird 0 #1 November 7, 2002 I have to donate blood for my husband's surgery. Anyone ever donate blood? I was wondering how tired I will feel. I know I have to be 110lbs Im 105 but if eat a bunch today I can get to 110 tomorrow, I think
nacmacfeegle 0 #2 November 7, 2002 Afterwards you will probably feel light headed, lay off any recreational drugs such as alcohol etc for a couple of hours. A nice cup of tea, hot chocolate etc and a candy bar will rebalance your blood pretty quickly. I've given blood on a voluntary basis twice a year for the last 20 years or so. In the UK its not for money or loved ones, it goes into a blood bank. Its no biggie, but I'm a little more than 110lbs...Just relax, if you aren't into needles, look away, you'll be fine Tiff. flyhi 24 #3 November 7, 2002 The military won't let you fly for at least 72 hours after you give blood. Reduced blood volume = reduced ablity to carry O2, which at altitude (where there is less O2 anyway) makes hypoxia a little more possible. Might want to consider not going up this weekend, if you want to be safe. Good luck to you and hubby.Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics. nacmacfeegle 0 #4 November 7, 2002 Good point Flyhi, I normally donate on a wed nite, so it doesn't affect my weekend...-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. ladyskydiver 0 #5 November 7, 2002 Good luck to you and your husband. I've given blood a few times. You'll be a little tired afterwards, but they tell you to enjoy coffee, chocolate, etc. I don't like needles, but it's worth it. Just look the other way and let them know if you are apprehensive. They'll do their best to calm you.Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile. TheBile 0 #6 November 7, 2002 Hope everything goes OK for you both. QuoteI've given blood on a voluntary basis True story : I tried to do that on three seperate occasions. Each time the Nurses said that they couldn't get a full pint out of me (insert joke here) within the alloted time frame that you are given. Because they can only use full units of blood it means that they can't use what they get from me, so I had to quit trying. Pity. I used to love the free tea and biscuits.Gerb I stir feelings in others they themselves don't understand. KA'CHOW !
freebird 0 #7 November 7, 2002 Well Im a nursing student so needles are cool as long as some student( like me )is not using me to learn) I just have tons of driving to do and do not want to pass out on the Houston freeway
highfly 0 #8 November 7, 2002 Well I used to give blood until I went to India. The National Blood transfusion service( UK ) informed me that I wouldn't be able to give blood for at least a year after, just in case of any tropical dieseases. I went back a year later ready to give them an armful and guess what? They would'nt let me because of my high adreneline sporting life. It wasn't that I used to enjoy giving it but 1 day I may well need it myself. It's just a case of giving and hopefully not reciving. www.myspace.com/durtymac
freebird 0 #9 November 7, 2002 Theres no way I can jump this weekend (too stressed) although it may help how stressed out I am. I have mid terms the next two weeks and the surgery is Mon. His blood count is only 6,( sholud be around 18 or more)( red blood cells) yet he still will not stay in bed, he went to work. Its his own clinic he can leave if he wanted to, but he is waiting to the last min. With a blood count of 6, they should of kept his ass in the hospital until the surgery Mon. He has to take it he really needs it to get through a day. The immune suppressor drugs are making him sick he had to start them early. Anyway the pain pills will help alot. Thanks again for the good vibes.
SpeedRacer 1 #14 November 7, 2002 Tonight would be a good night to have steak for dinner. Red meat would pretty well replace what you're missing after you give blood..i.e., protein, B vitamins, iron already attached to a heme group. etc. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

mountainman 0 #16 November 7, 2002 I gave blood as often as I could until I was about 19 years old. I was lifting weights a lot and when I donated once, they said that a liver enzyme count was too high. I went to the doctor and he said it was fine. I was (still am) pissed because I will never be able to donate again. That is a very ridiculous rule. Especially with the large shortage in my area. I have went several times to see if the laws have changed or if there is anything I can do so I can donate again. http://www.brandonandlaura.com
billvon 3,090 #17 November 7, 2002 >I have to donate blood for my husband's surgery. Anyone ever > donate blood? I was wondering how tired I will feel. I've donated a little over a gallon. No ill effects unless I try to bike ride or something else that takes stamina. (Note to self - do NOT bike 10 miles to the red cross center in the future!) wlie 0 #19 November 7, 2002 Yap. Been doing it since I was 17. I still have my "one gallon donor" key chain that's really cool. It's registered with the USPS, so in case I lose them, hopefully they'll show up at the blood bank when someone finds it and drops it into a mailbox. My other ride is the relative wind. Michele 1 #20 November 7, 2002 Hi, Tiff. the day before I know I'm due to donate: Extra vitimins, red meat, and an iron supplement. The morning of: As much water as I can possibly drink. Make sure I take my vitimins. Make sure I eat something for breakfast and lunch (which I rarely do). During: Nap After: As much water as I can possibly drink, coupled with orange juice (or other real juice), and red meat for dinner. No alcohol the night before, nor the night after. I have an unusual combination of things in my blood (0+ [universal donor], CMV negative) which means my blood tends to be needed for babies and other immuno-supressed, so I donate on a regular basis. I only have had one bad experience, in the 12 or so years I've been doing this. I passed out during the recovery period. I hadn't eaten breakfast nor had much water that day, and it was in the middle of a heat wave in summer.... Hope it goes well. tigra 0 #21 November 7, 2002 I used to donate regularly- whole blood and platelets. Now LifeSource has a problem with my annual vacations in Mexico. (Malaria risk, even though I have stayed in resort areas and have never gotten sick there) Its a shame they have to be so careful with donors, because I am healthy, willing and have a rare blood type. So many eligible donors are not willing to donate for any number of reasons........ Tiffany, Since you are so small, please be careful. Donating might affect you more than other people. Do make sure you eat a healthy meal before and at least a snack afterwards, plus plenty of fluids, preferably water and juice, NOT margaritas! Good luck to you and your husband! maura

Rdutch 0 #24 November 7, 2002 When I was in High School we had a Blood Drive. Of course I volunteer'd (to get out of class of course). Well after, my buddy tells me he has a pint of Jack Daniell's in his car. So we go out to the parking lot to take a few shot's. I get 2 down and wham! I am super drunk. Worse thing is I have to go to class. So now Im drunk in class, teacher is asking me whats wrong, I tell her bad reaction to giving blood. So now I get to go home early with a killer buzz everything worked out great. Giving blood is always a good thing and if you do it frequently, think about all the money you will save in beer.
