Cutaway

Recommended Posts

I just watched "Cutaway" the movie (on video) OK I know it's got a lot of crap in it. and the stroyline and acting is pathetic. But, some of the sky footage was great.
Being in Australia and new to the sport, I was wondering if anyone on DZ.com was involved in the movie. They all weren't actors.
Was it shot at a real DZ or staged?
Also are there any other movies that are worth watching for the skydiving, other than Teminal Velocity and Point Break?
You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky)

All the beach shots were done in Flagler Beach and the rest was in Miami. Before the movie came out, we watched it w/ Norm and he narrated the different scenes.

You have to have the cheesy plot for whuffo's to enjoy but the skydiving footage was excellent, I thought.

The skydiving scenes were done by skydivers. Eli Thompson and Fritz Pfnur are two that you may have heard of. Maxine Bahns was doubled by Pam Manos.

Marcos Ferraez (Ground Rush) actually had 200 jumps. Stephen Baldwin had 15 or so. One of the producers did 3 tandems. Freefall scenes with actor close-ups were done with a wind machine for safety reasons.

Skydive Miami is on Homestead Airport. The film was shot on the airport, but not directly at the dz. The "dz" was a set. The Fort Bragg wind tunnel was really shot there.

The background extras were mostly skydivers in the close up scenes.

Both Tom Berenger and his wife got their A-license. (he got his shortly after filming finished)

An extra walked up to Tom (who generally sat by himself) and asked him to sign an autograph. Tom said he was too busy. Within 5 minutes, a crew member came over and said that if any extras talked to the cast anymore that all extras would be let go.

I know that they are working. I don't know what that involves mentally. However, he could have just said to see him at end of the day. Instead, he was threatening the job of a guy who makes $70 a day for an 10-hour day. I thought he was a butthead for that. People who know him better may like him. Most of the other actors seemed ok. The crew guys were just doing their job and seemed like a fun crowd.

wasn't Bill Booth in the background in a couple of scenes... they did some filming at DeLand also (I was there one of the days), and I believe it is their skyvan that was used.

Bill Booth was only in one scene that I remember. Just as Baldwin rode up on the motorcycle and got off in the beginning. He and Raina (spelling?) were sitting at a table debating whether Baldwin was some type of govt official (cop, child-welfare). Raina was one of the 3 girls doing a balloon jump on the WFFC posters. Her boyfriend Rambo did the pond-swoop/crash doubling for Baldwin.

A lot of the scenes involving the interior of the Skydive Deland plane were shot at night on the ground with lighting in Miami. For the in-air shots, there was a film crew guy with a camera standing next to the tailgate filming exits with no rig, just harnessed to the side of the aircraft. Yuck. :S

Really? I thought there was a lot of scenes that were actually real footage, at least of Baldwin.

He's more than in the background right at the begining. I'm pretty sure that's him, sitting with family trying to figure out if this guy is FAA or whatever, and they determine he's a wuffo ... then Bill picks up a rig, and it doesn't look like a Vector. :D

Uh, Ix-nay.

Berenger made about 25 jumps during filming, and went back later to shoot a few more. Baldwin made about the same number.

What they did was put them on these ladder-looking contraptions. The bottom half of their body was supported, nothing but sky in the background. Baldwin and Berrenger would be inches apart and a compressed air line was fed into what looked like a megaphone. The blowing air looked like freefall.

A lot of Baldwins scenes were skyball, headdown, swooping. Can't do that with 20 jumps. There probably was some very limited freefall scenes used, but it had to be pretty small given his experience level. Flat and stable for 10 seconds? I always suspected that more of it was hyping the movie.

If the central figure breaks his ankle on a bad landing, there is a lot of expensive people standing around. Producers don't like that. When Brandon Lee was killed during "The Crow", a lot of scrambling went on.

Not to hijack...

Most actors who didn't make it suddenly, but worked hard and over time became celebs are not like that. They understand that but for the fans there would be no work for them. Some overnight "stars" also get it. And there are those who are just assholes, and think their excrement is not maloderous...and then they find themselves with a reputation which, although deserved, is not necessarily a good one.

Pop makes it a point to sign any 'graphs asked for - going so far as to make sure he has paper and a pen with him, in case someone wants one but has nothing to write on/with. He has been known to take an hour at the supermarket, getting lettuce for the salad, because he gets into a conversation, and is having a good time. We were in NYC, and he literally stopped traffic - well, the cabby did so he could say "hi" to Pop...

Actors are working, mostly, while they're on the set. It may not be "work" like you and I know it - paper from the in basket, do something with it, paper to the out basket - but there is some genuine work going on. This, however, does not preclude one being polite and nice...and saying, like Happy Thoughts, "hey, I'm a bit busy - catch me at lunch/end of the day". I never did understand why they don't.

No, I know the skyball and swooping and stuff were stand-ins, we were talking about the close-ups. There's actually a lot of shots of Baldwin, like at breakoff and stuff (and evidently, no one has to track in the movies) and deployment that are really him.

It's kind of interesting that they were able to have a conversation at normal levels in the back of the Van:S, we know how quiet that plane is!:). I can see Rambo being his double -- he's a pretty big guy.

During the "conversation" scenes, the plane was on the ground and not running. Rambo is a good size guy. Baldwin isn't really.

There was also one landing scene (which I thought he flared kind of high) that without a doubt was Baldwin's.

There's a possibility. Stuff like that. Standing still, break offs. I know they filmed a lot of faux skydiving on the ground. A huge amount of stuff is always cut. All ground scenes were shot 4 or 5 times. A lot of air scenes were cut. If he was in some scenes, they would have to be a couple of 3-second breakoff shots. Not exactly "OMG, did you hear Stephen did ALL his own stunts?"

The stunt doubles were pretty hard to spot. Pam Manos looks a lot like Maxine Bahns in real life. Dennis Rodmans double was a white guy, so it is pretty hard to tell who is a double and who isn't.
