Have you ever served in armed forces?

I was in the 313th MI from 98-2000

Hmmm.....We may have passed each other and not known it. I was at Bragg working with various units from December 98- October 2000. Tried to avoid the "conventional" scene as much as possible but I did get sucked into a couple mass tacs and 1 Purple Dragon exercise. Used to work with the Division ACP when I got stuck with the 82nd bone heads.:D

I was trained as a Special Forces weapons specialist during the early 70's. Went to basic and infantry training at FT. Polk, Jump School at Benning, and Three phases of Special forces training at Bragg. But I was also in the National Guard which, back in those days, was kind of a joke. I should have stayed in the regular army. We did get to jump every couple months after returning from active duty though. So at least that part was fun. Steve1

Spent 6 & 1/2 years in the Army; Airborne, Ranger, Corps of Engineers, Aviator, 25th ID. Had enough of sleeping in the mud and left.

19 years in the Coast Guard flying SAR, et al until I switched over to the dark-side; armed interdiction helicopters.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

I too "retired" after 4 years in the USAF. I hated it at the time, but now when I look back at those years, I realize it was really a ball.

I don't regret serving, but I was glad to leave. I was really sick of the BS. That, and being a second-class citizen in my own country.

You, like myself must have served during the Vietnam war. I also had that same feeling. It's quite different now though. The pay also sucked. I was ready to get out when I did, but glad I served.

Awright, guys, you don't have one, so don't act like one

3 yrs active duty, 4 yrs reserves 67-74. Enlisted airborne, commissioned Mil Intel. MACV advisor Vietnam. XO 502nd MI Det, 2nd Armored Division, Ft Hood.

My wicked stepfather was XO of the 293rd Avn Co at West Fort Hood at about the same time. Later, he went MI too (ACS J-2 [cm], Yongsan), after a couple of tours at Taegu flying RU-21s.

Being MI, he never went to C&GSC, so never got his own command. Finished out as an O-5 after 24 years. Not bad.

An interesting tidbit - a Mohawk from the 293rd set an altitude record that still stands today.

I used to fly model rockets at the tank range at Hood when I was nine, and some friends of mine discovered thousands of live rounds of linked 7.62 blanks and some smoke grenades that had been "expended" (abandoned and written off as expended, actually) by some GIs in the field one day...

Being an Army Brat wasn't all bad. B|

Nah, too young. People ask me if I was a Nam vet, but I enlisted in the AF in '81, so the answer is no...

...unless you count being an Army Brat. Both my father and my wicked stepfather were there. My father was a signals (telephone) E-5, Purple Heart. My wicked stepfather flew OV-1 Mohawks from Can Tho (244th Avn Co - "The Delta Hawks").

I was with my family in Korea for two years just before enlisting (Yes, I was 16 in Yongsan. Can you say "YOWZA!"? hehehe)

But my active duty was as an F-15 Avionics puke.(Bitburg 82-84). ETS'd from McChord in July '85. Good riddance! - heh:ph34r:

It wasn't bad in Germany. After all, we were tolerated. But I never thought I'd be treated the way I was when I was in the States.

I didn't expect anybody to fawn over me, but it would have been nice not to have been discriminated against because I was a GI.

You survived? Man...that must have been a blast!!!! B|

It was an adventure beyond describing. Now try PCS-ing to the states and having to get a job. After having been a prince in Korea, Virginia Beach was a real letdown...heh

wow. small world.i helped retire the mohawks at 224 MI and some from Ft. Hood. not terribly long ago...

Yup. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that a Hawk pilot who had flown with my wicked stepfather in the 244th at Can Tho and later in the 293rd at Hood, and visited us from 2nd ID (Tongduchon) when we were in Yongsan, was a manager with the Boeing company in my geographical area up until about 18 months ago.

And I can't remember his name, but there is a retired Army enlisted, now a Tandem Master at Lodi, who worked on Hawks for a while when active, and was trying to obtain one surplus. Seems all the retired Hawks were being used as targets on USAF / USN bombing ranges. If you know about Mohawk history, you know that this was as ignominious an end for the program as can be imagined.

yeah i saw two on the range at Camp Shelby. the warrant i was with wondered what tail numbers they were.

as far as i know the only ones left on on display Huachuca, Hood, HAAF, Humphreys, just to name a few...ive seen recently..i doubt theres much left of the targets..

aparently they used to jump out of the ARLs (the bird that replaced the Mohawk in Korea) at humphreys once.

I am about to retire with a bit over 21 years of service. I was an 11C mortar maggot in Germany for two years then attended the SFQC in 1984 and have been stationed at Fort Bragg, NC since then in both the 3rd and 7th Special Forces Groups, then four years (and a little bit) at USAJFKSWC (the school). I don't regret a second of it. It has been a very interesting life.

Chuck
