Gawain 0 #1 November 22, 2002 This article is long, but quite interesting and somewhat of a different perspective on how long we're going to be engaging in this war on terror and supporting states. Just when you thought the nuclear program was going to contract...it may simply morph into something with, shall we say, enhanced capabilities. Bunker Nightmare Goes Nuclear Edit: Fixed the link...thx Michele... Myself, being among one of the last generations to coherently remember the cold war, and the demands to "tear this wall down", I still find it difficult to decisively take a side on issues such as this. I want us to continue to expand our knowledge of this technology, but am fearful of the whole idea of their use in the modern world. Unlike WWII, the US is no longer the sole possessor of weapons like this, and is certainly not the only country capable of developing weapons described in the Popular Science article. Once you let the genie out, you can't force it back....So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Michele 1 #2 November 22, 2002 Making it clicky...but I don't know how to title it right.... www.popsci.com/popsci/science/article/0,12543,351094,00.html"]Bunker Nightmare Goes Nuclear As for the genie going back into the bottle, get it drunk, and then slide it back in. If you're old enough to remember the cold war, you are also old enough to remember what happened to Genie when she got drunk! freeflir29 0 #4 November 22, 2002 They have much better "bunker busters" than the GBU-28 and the BLU-118. Much better................I don't think the nukes would ever be used. Too much red tape.
PhillyKev 0 #5 November 22, 2002 Yeah, and I wouldn't think we'd ever imprison US citizens without trial again after the Japanese-Americans during WWII. And I wouldn't think we would start using the video cameras that were installed specifically and supposedly only for traffic monitoring to catch speeders and send them tickets in the mail, and I wouldn't think we would then start using those cameras to monitor legal demonstrations on public streets, and I wouldn't think we would then start using those cameras to monitor law abiding citizens going about their daily business. It's all little steps that lead up to what we see as inconceivable now. 100 years ago who would have thought we'd be exploring space. But when you go from trains to automobiles to airplanes to jets to rockets to satellites to space shuttles to space stations, the next step is not as inconceivable. We need to stop the little steps that the current administration is putting in motion before we get to what we now see as inconceivable.
billvon 3,120 #6 November 22, 2002 >I don't think the nukes would ever be used. Too much red tape. Wow, and I can remember when the reason we wouldn't use nukes is that we didn't want to all die. Now only red tape is stopping us - and we have whole new parts of government dedicated to busting through that red tape in the name of national security. freeflir29 0 #7 November 22, 2002 Quote Now only red tape is stopping us Well...I say that because using this sort of weapon is "differen't" than using an above ground nuke. It's somewhat environmentally safe..... J/K Anyway...we can get it done without nukes. We still have the BLU-77 I think it is. FAE weapon. Use one of those on the first pass, a GBU-28 on the second, and put down some CBU-97's to deny use of the area. If the first two didn't get them in the cave....the last one will get them when they come out.
billvon 3,120 #8 November 22, 2002 >Anyway...we can get it done without nukes. Reports I saw claimed that the reason for developing the new weapon was to penetrate bunkers that are unbreachable with our current weapons.
freeflir29 0 #9 November 22, 2002 Quoteclaimed that the reason for developing the new weapon was to penetrate bunkers that are unbreachable with our current weapons. Well...I think in most circumstances we don't need to. I'm sure there are some but if you cut the bunker off from comm with the outside world and litter the outside with mines.......what is it other than a tomb?
