Jessica 0 #1 November 24, 2002 I just e-mailed a flight school to schedule an introductory flying lesson. I can't afford to learn to fly...therefore I shouldn't even subject myself to a single lesson when I know I can't continue, right? I need to stop surfing the internet when I'm bored at work. I have no idea how I even stumbled on that page. My concern is that I'll love it and therefore "find a way," like I did with skydiving, and end up living in a cardboard box. Oh well. Should be fun. Both my parents have private pilot licenses and I grew up in the back of a Piper Cherokee.Skydiving is for cool people only
freeflir29 0 #2 November 24, 2002 It is expensive!! Cost you about twice the amount of an A license to get a PP ticket. I have 53 hours now and have ALMOST finished all my requirements. I think I need .1 of goggle time and a long cross country. I just kinda lost interest #1 it's sooo damn expensive. Like $78 an hour just for the plane rental around here. #2 It's kinda hard for me to justify spending the money when the aviation industry is not going to offer me a job any time soon. As much as I enjoy flying I had to put it off until I can afford it as a "hobby."
pilotdave 0 #3 November 24, 2002 I fly planes, but had a similar situation over the summer with helicopters. I was working at a helicopter company and jumping at an airport with a helicopter school. I just had to try it. At $195/hr dual, I knew there was no way I could afford to really do it. But the one flight was a lot of fun! Flying planes is awesome. Who cares if you're living in a cardboard box as long as you're having fun, right? I find skydiving more fun than flying, but flying is more rewarding. Flying to the DZ to make a couple jumps is just the ultimate. Both times I've tried that this year have ended with no jumps. Stupid wind. But instead of sitting around waiting for the wind hold to end, I took people for plane rides. Sure beats doing NOTHING! Dave
CanuckInUSA 0 #4 November 24, 2002 Go for the Discovery Flight if you can afford just that. Flying airplanes is an awesome experience. My passion right now is skydiving and my flying time has suffered (I fly only 1-2 times a month whereas I used to fly 1-2 times a week). But obtaining my private pilot's certificate last year was one of the greatest achievements of my life (it was much harder to become a licensed pilot than it was to become a licensed skydiver). And some of the greatest days of my life have been when I'm on a winter mountain flight that I've taken over the Colorado mountains. But it is a very very expensive thing to do and requires a lot of commitment and recurrent flying and/or training. Happy flying and of course jumping ... trfenwyd 0 #5 November 25, 2002 flying can offer some things skydiving can't. aka transportation. But if you're looking for a thrill, flying an airplane really isn't all that great. Try it, but don't be worried about getting hooked. in vino veritas- (there is truth in wine)
