freeflir29 0 #26 November 22, 2002 QuoteThat's gotta be a skill someone would appreciate!! So see what it takes to open your own micro brewery. That would be kick ass!!! Plus it's a very popular thing these days.
SpeedRacer 1 #27 November 22, 2002 Problem is, I live in microbrew-land already. Frederick brewing company (makers of Frederick Brewingcompany beer, Wild Goose, Blue Ridge beers) plus brewpubs up the wazoo. LOTS of competition. Hey maybe I could open up a dropzone-based brewpub....hmmm, maybe at CrossKeys, they get enough business to support it. Twin Otter Ale, Porter Porter, King Air Stout...Show your USPA card & get a free jello shooter!! If nothing else it might be something that pays for your skydiving. You never know how far it might go. What do you have to lose? The worst thing that can happen is you have a bunch of beer to drink!!! You just have to find your niche market.

Year-round jumping, not enough microbrews, and a whole lotta medical schools and hospitals to grow germs in... kevin922 0 #33 November 22, 2002 Quote well, I just got the news. I'm laid off, effective Dec. 6. I've worked here for nearly 7 years, so the severance package will give me something like 16 or 18 weeks of pay, plus I have about 5 weeks of un-used vacation time they're going to pay. So I need a new job. Anyone need any cloning done?? (hmmmm.....I hear Saddam Hussein is looking for molecular biologists.....) Been there done that, sorry to hear it man. Did you see it coming? I put in 6 years with worldcom and they wacked me.. severence? yeah they told me i'd get it.. did I get it? yeah finally, but it didn't look like I was for the longest time. Oh well.. where are you located what do you do? At my new job, we are hiring already got one other skydiver a job there :) Kevin
Michele 1 #34 November 23, 2002 Shit, Speedy...that sux. I'm sorry. But someone with your talent and skills shouldn't be unemployed for long. As for that microbrewery stuff, go out and taste test about a dozen tonight... SpeedRacer 1 #35 November 23, 2002 It was weird...I was just finishing up a prep of lentivirus that had the Green Fluorescent Protein gene cloned into it...I was spinning it down in the ultracentrifuge when I got the final news...I still had to go back & take it out of the ultracentrifuge and resuspend it in buffer & freeze it, even though now that whole program (and me along with it) is being canceled. Hmmm. If this were a 1960's B horror movie...you've got a scientist who has just had his project canceled & been fired....He's just made a batch of virus that the company doesn't want any more.......what happens next??? "So, they've CANCELED MY PROJECT?? THEY FIRED ME???? Well, I'LL show them!! I'LL SHOW THEM ALL!!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"<> Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
AggieDave 6 #36 November 23, 2002 I've always wanted to see a malt liquor made and distributed in 40oz bottles called "hook'n in." "Hey Joe, what's ya do'n?" gemini 0 #40 November 23, 2002 Quote well, I just got the news. I'm laid off, effective Dec. 6......) Look at the bright side, get a dz to support your team and start training for nationals! I work with a guy who is a bio engineer (gene splicer) who is doing IT/Accounting/Sys Security at a major refinery. He would rather work in his profession, but the $70k he is making vs. $0 is too good. Be aggresive and look at what you can do, not at what you have done! Being from Houston...I can really feel you pain. Hang in there. Blue skies, Jim
SpeedRacer 1 #41 November 25, 2002 The thing that really sucks is this: I was working on oncolytic vectors (adenovirus that replicates inside tumor cells until the cells die). I ctually MADE a few preps of virus, and I had even had a gene in there to shut off the virus in case something went wrong (a sort of fail-safe mechanism). And I tested it to make sure both the virus and the "fail-safe" gene worked. So last month my company says to stop doing that project, and start working with LENTIVIRUS on ocular gene therapy. So I started doing that. Now they've come along and said they're laying off everyone who isn't working on oncolytic adenovirus!!! AFTER they stopped me from working on it FIVE WEEKS AGO!! Frickin' dumbass upper management. I feel like I'm living in a Dilbert cartoon. I'd give this company about another six months. well I got my lab notebook all caught up & finished writing my last research report, so there's nothing to do for the next two weeks but search for a new job & post whore.
