Naw, I got over motorcycle-stupid crashing my Katana 1100 about 9 years ago. I would NEVER drop my K1200RS!

I think I've been cured of swoop-stupid for the low price of sore back and knees, and a bruised ego.

As the bruises begin to bloom I realize that I did manage to get my feet all the way up to my butt, and hit with my feet first. I had a lot of forward velocity and the toes of my shoes dug in, rotating my knees to impact the ground. That explains the two parallel ditches with a short break. My feet hit and dug a 3 foot trench, then my knees hit and dug a two foot trench, my flare finally took effect and I flared up off the ground and then I actually PLF'd pretty softly about 8 feet from there.

I keep trying to articulate to myself the differences. I think this is the best one so far: Downsizing is not like turbocharging your car. A smaller canopy of the same type is not like going from a normally aspirated Corvette to a blown Corvette. It's not a higher performance version of the same car. It's a completely different car with totally different steering and brakes.

I took my new car for a spin around the Wal-Mart parking lot and then took it out on the track. Duh. B|

I think Quade's comment about having accuracy be as "cool" as swooping is one worth reflecting on.

And a Velocity? Fuggettaboutit. Clearly it's gonna take at least 300 jumps to get proficient on my new Spectre. And anyone who thinks a Spectre isn't a high performance canopy is an idiot.

A Corvette is not as high performance as a Formula One car, but it's still very high performance.;)

Yeah... first 25 jumps at least on a new canopy (any size) I would: leave the slider uncollapsed, get big, fly straight-in approaches when you get close to the ground.

You can always dial it in one jump at a time. [:/]

Why? So you can wear your lines out quicker? Other then that, it won't increase your speed so much that you biff in your landing.



No, so you pay attention to the canopy flight and where you're going instead of staring at the slider (unless you normally collapse it w/o looking). Even though you are at half-brakes, you're going faster than you were at half brakes under the slower canopy.

Even if you're not used to collapsing the slider, you're doing that at above 2k (atleast, more like 3k for most), so it shouldn't wouldn't matter, except it will severly distract you by flapping and making all kinds of noise and put undue wear on your lines.

True, but you also lose some time for practicing. I haven't seen anybody get massive line sep from leaving their slider alone for a few jumps.

Quade's thread about dreams of cratering spooked me. I had a dream last weekend of a tib-fib crash and the sound was very eerie. I was talking to another camera flyer and "vroom crack-crack!" The crashed flyer wasn't anybody I knew (in the dream).
