riddler 0 #1 November 27, 2002 On Saturday. I thought $40 per jump was reasonable, so I did two. Standing on a strut hovering a mile off the ground and falling head down from virtually zero airspeed to terminal is amazing! The second ride saw me at 6,000. Like (I think) most skydivers, I had never been in a helicopter before and have to admit they are very cool! The pilot warned us to fall (not jump) from the strut because jumping makes the bird swing and the rotors could possibly come down and give you a "haircut". It sounds unlikely, but I wasn't about to second guess him so I fell. Anyone ever heard of that before? Is that typical with a helicopter jump? Any skydivers been hurt by jumping and getting hit by the rotor? Obviously you don't jump up, but I wonder if you could get hurt jumping out. And yes, I brought a case of micro-brew with me Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
LouDiamond 1 #2 November 27, 2002 To answer your question I'll say yes and no. If you jumped from the helo pictured it's possible you could cause the bird to quickly lean and that makes the pilot have to correct for it. It's the same as someone jumping out of a small boat, it's gonna rock. All the helos I've jumped out of were larger models and it's not so pronounced. Usually they will tell you which side is to go first or alternate jumpers per side. This way the pilot can prepare for it. I've been on a bird where 3-4 guys got out on one side all at the same time and it made the bird wobble more than I cared for as a passenger so I'm sure the pilot wasn't happy either. I won't say it's impossible but it's improbable that you could jump so hard that you propelled yourself into the turning main rotar."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

riddler 0 #6 November 27, 2002 Yes, but has anyone actually been hurt by this? I could guess it's possible, but I'm curious if this has ever happened. BTW - sorry about your wife running off with Melissa Etheridge.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
jerm 0 #7 November 27, 2002 hmmm... where'd you jump that? Crosskeys just got an Alouette(sp?) looking nearly identical to that... did eddows take it somewhere else or is this becoming a popular helo in the states? Sher doesn't look like crosskeys in the pic.. *gak* Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
riddler 0 #8 November 27, 2002 I can't give you very good answers to that, I'm afraid, because I don't have them. I know the pilot said this was his first time taking skydivers, so it's not a circuit bird. I *think* he's local to Colorado.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. Beeron 0 #9 November 27, 2002 The pilot did say that he's based here in CO and that he typically does mtn. tours with his bird. I'm pretty sure that he'll be coming out quite a bit next summer too. Wasn't that a blast Phil? B~
riddler 0 #10 November 27, 2002 I was awesome doing our first chopper jump together! I was amazed I could actually hear you talk out on that strut - then I was looking down and didn't hear you say "three", but we seemed to exit fine. You did a great job tracking away, even though we didn't have a ton of free-fall. That one guy said we pulled at exactly the same time. Then next ride was even better - after Thomas and his friend exited, the pilot shot up to 6,000, so I got a nice free-fall out of it. I'm still having flashbacks of standing on that strut at 6 grand. I hope Randy and Ralph don't wait until the summer to bring him out again. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
