Anyone know how to handle blisters?

Recommended Posts

Long story, not gonna get into it. Suffice it to say a 5 mile walk (2 miles +/- in 2 inch heels, three more in stocking feet) have destroyed my feet. I was leaving bloody heelprints on the sidewalk.

I have soaked them in salt water (oh my word that hurt like hell), trimmed the dead hanging flesh (which also hurt like a bear), dried them off and then put hydrogen peroxide on them, and then stuck bandaids on them.

What else can/should I do to prevent them from hurting as absolutely horridly as they do or getting infected? I've had two strong drinks already, and nothing to eat today at all, so they don't hurt too badly right now...and I'm sitting as well. But I dread tomorrow morning...

Any hints? I've never gotten blisters this badly.

M,
I'm a backpacker and bicycle rider and although I have never had to walk rather than put out I have had my share of blisters.
Your local pharmacy should have mole skin. One brand name is Second Skin. This is a wetter cover than regular old bandages. It is intended to go right over the blister but if you have removed the epidermis, put a pad over that part before applying it. Some Novacane brand ointment before hand may deaden some of the pain. Leave the mole skin on until it rots off.

I'll second the mole skin. Its saved my feet on a couple of week long 70 milers in the past. Just cut it to about 1/2 inch in all directions larger then the blister, put on the novicane if you have it (gel is best) and slap it on. DON'T put neosporian on yet. Keeping the tissue soft will only keep it tender for longer. Once the mole skin finally starts to get nasty (about 4-5 days) take it off and see the shape of the skin. If its started to harden over you can either repeat the mole skin or you can move into the conventional treatments. If its still soft and red/pink repeat the mole skin.

In the future don't pop blisters if you can help it, the fluid can be a nice pad for comfort of the new tissue under it with moleskin.

Thanks, guys (well, with the exception of Viking's tabasco suggestion)...I don't have any mole skin, but will look into that tomorrow along with an antibiotic ointment. Cool website, Quade. It's been bookmarked.

I didn't pop them...they ruptured all by themselves. They are all largish (smallest about 1/2 inch, largest the width and length of my right heel) and on the bottom of my feet. Because the ones on my heels both had unfortunately gotten to the point of bleeding (although the right one more than the left), I am most worried about infection (hey, the mean streets of LA are not clean...). I've now slipped a pair of sox on, to keep them as clean and dry as possible.

Not getting into it, thanks.

how about??? LAND CLOSER!

I don't skydive in heels and hose...yet...and while my canopy control does suck, I haven't landed that far off...

no money.

or have a friend pick you up?

No cell phone, no money, and the ones who I knew would accept a collect call were at their families having a Thanksgiving dinner.

Try breaking bones.

I have. Left wrist, innumerable broken toes and fingers, ribs, and ankles. I agree - blisters are preferable.

pray tell, exactly how does that feel [Tongue]

Ever seen a bear which is not mortally wounded but is hurt nonetheless? Ever hear them bellow? That intensity level, and if I were the screaming kind, I'd've put that bear to shame...;)
