Me, My Truck and the nearly $400 wrecker...

Recommended Posts

Well, driving home from Sherman back to College Station took almost 12 hours and almost $400 today, instead of the usual 4 hours and about $20 in gas.

I've been trying to find a small, very slow coolant leak in my truck for the past month or so and I thought I had found it and repaired it a week or so ago, but aparently I hadn't. For in Palmer, TX (about 2hrs south of Dallas), a threaded fitting that connected my engine block to a hose that ran to my transmission (transmission cooler, run off of the main engine cooling) sheared clean in two. Some how it had corroded to the point of failure, dumping all of my coolant on the highway in a very VERY short amount of time. Luckily I noticed the engine temp rising quickly and I got off the highway. Calling my favorite wrecker here in College Station, they agreed to send a flatbed up and get my truck. This was after trying to find a local company to do it, all of which refused.

So here I sit at home (finally, its 3:30am) with my truck outside of one of the shops here in town, longing for a "magic-fix-it-button." Since repairing it requires tools I don't have and time I don't have, I get to see how much it will cost to get it fixed.

All in all its been a very expensive day for me and my truck (I just ordered new tires/wheels for my truck today, my really cool Christmas present from my folks, so that's another $800 on my truck today).

Today's truck total: $1200 and I haven't even gotten anything repaired yet...>:(

I think I'm going to get some jumps tomorrow then drink myself a good deal of beer to soothe the frustration I'm feeling right now.

My truck is only 4 years old with 70k miles on it. Although this is the first major problem I've had with it (ate a couple alternators for a bit, then I squared that away)...

Oh-well, atleast I can be excited about my new tires/wheels, I get them Dec 23rd, getting rid of my dinky 265/75R16s, putting some 33x12.50/15s on there...B|

Oh... if my son's reaction to getting 33's on his truck is any indication... you won't stop smiling when you look at your truck for months!

Post a pic when you get 'em mounted. :)

A pic? Shit, I'll be in Eloy 2 days after I get them

I'm sure there are a few people reading this who can't make it to Eloy but would still like to see your truck with 33's.... Well. Okay. So there's maybe one person reading it who wants to see it. Still. Post a pic.

Remember what the truck looked like?

Yup. And it's gonna look even sweeter once you get those babies mounted!

Now all I need to do is save the money for a Ranch Hand front end replacement...

Yeah, I'll get some pics posted...hell, I might even grab my dad's digital camera (since I'll be in Sherman for X-mas anyways) and toss some quick ones up on the forum...

About 2 month or so ago, a moving company knocked the rear bumper of my little old Mitsubishi. When they finally sent me a check, it was enough to cover repairs at the cheapest body shop around, but not enough for a rental so I could get to work. The money went to my mortgage. My first night at my new job, someone smashed a huge dent into the rear passenger side, about where the bumper should be. And 3 days ago, my CD player just quit, so I drive everywhere in silence. So yes, AggieDave, I feel your pain.

Going down in rim size for a few reasons. #1 More tire then rim compared to a 16" rim, it'll give me the ability to really widen out my footpring when I air down on the trail. #2 $$ everything is less expensive when you're looking at 15" wheels. B|

ah yes. #1 makes sense if you are mudding, and not worried as much about ground clearance (or do you gain more anyway because the sidewalls are larger?)... #2 makes even more sense :)
