Who else has seen this movie. I just watched it on the sat last night. One thing that movie did was PISS ME OFF. I guess I had never realized just how much of a moron JFK was. Good thing he didn't finish his term. He might have just given up Alaska or even the White House to the Russians too. [:/]

His whole life was like that. He started out in intelligence and was told that the German chick he was dating was a spy. He was close to being arrested, but his dad's pull got him out of it.

He went to the Pacific and parked a PT boat under a Jap destroyer. "Sorry...didn't see ya." Most people would regard that as a case of the dumbass, but they spun it into a hero thing.

His failure to provide air support at the Bay of Pigs sentenced the Cuban people to a life under Castro.

His fiscal policies started a deficit spending level that we struggle under. All they did was fund welfare programs that everyone now realizes are a failure. The list goes on and on...

What pissed you off about it?

I guess you fail to see that he CAUSED the entire incident and damn near destroyed the human race through incompetence. He started it by screwing up the Bay of Pigs. That gave the Russians cause to support Cuba. Sort of Proxy war just like Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and the whole of Africa. So they did...then dumbass comes up with a plan to "Trade" our missles in Turkey? WTF OVER???? He started it and then through sheer LUCK he avoided WWIII. Complete FUCKING idiot.

That is pretty much his whole problem. JFK would come with some easy to support philosophy, but the reality of implementing them was ludicrous. I think he just stood too close to the happy-gas vent. Everyone likes being war-free, pollution-free, perfect jobs, etc. However, how you get there is a tough road and he didn't seem to live in the same reality as everyone else. His foreign and domestic policy decisions were abysmal.

You are correct about the film. It's garbage. Even funnier is Costner, a conservative in real life, trying to be a social Bostonian.

Our history generally is one sided, leaving Cuba and the USSR out of the picture. The movie turns history upside-down and leaves the USSR out of picture, and some of the real reasons why Khrushchev put missiles there to begin with. That doesn't even touch the real brutal policy that Kennedy wanted to play out towards Cuba.

Eisenhower knew the deployment of Jupiter missiles in Turkey and Italy would be provocative in the least sense. The month they were fully operational, April 1962 was the same month that Khrushchev decided to authorize a build up in Cuba.

What I will cite as effective though, was Kennedy's ability to keep the hawks at bay. If we had followed their plan and invaded, the response from the Cubans and Russians was to use the tactical nukes which were operational on the beachhead. That alone would have snuffed us out for good.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

But if he hadn't backed himself against the wall in the first place he wouldn't have had to. Anyway....he was the president....."The Hawks" were soldiers...soldiers take orders. I think somebody turned the tables a little later though. ;)

I don't think the movie was garbage. Actually, I thought it was pretty good.

The thing I liked most about it is the good portrayal of US intelligence flights in the Cold War. Especially the U-2 that was lost over Cuba during the crisis. Much of the general population doesn't even KNOW a U-2 was shot down over Cuba, and I thought the treatment of it in the movie was a just memorial to not only that incident, but the several (and I mean SEVERAL) others in which US intel crews lost their lives.

Yes, Costner's accent was laughable, but I thought Greenwood did an excellent job portraying JFK.

My problem is.....that pilot MAY have lived to a ripe old age if JFK hadn't been such a bungling idiot with foreign policy. The fault for that pilot's death rests SQUARELY on JFK's shoulders. As the death's of 18 Rangers/Etc. in Somalia rest squarely on the shoulders of Clinton. They died because our President was an idiot that REFUSED to give our soldiers the tools they both NEEDED and ASKED for. That is what pisses me off.
