Michele 1 #3 December 11, 2002 Yep, it's gonna get interesting quickly. I wonder how many shipments haven't been intercepted? And what those shipments contained.... .... Michele 1 #7 December 11, 2002 Yes, Kriss, I've heard of that happening. It's gonna get wonky, I think, and will be for a while. It's chilling...and sobering. (edit: someday, I'll click the links and to my surprise will find the information I'm looking for...) SudsyFist 0 #8 December 11, 2002 c'mon folks, the only news here is that the ship was intercepted; such weaponry has been standard dprk export product to a number of middle eastern countries for years. this particular incident is much more eye-grabbing headline material than an earth-shaking indicator of things to come. steve
Michele 1 #9 December 11, 2002 Hi, Steve...perhaps you're right - they've been exporting it for years. But I haven't seen any headlines, and the Spanish aren't the ones who usually board/intercept. And remember the Karine-A last year? Wonder where the guys in the airline attack and hotel bombing last week got their stuff? Maybe it was the Karine B... Maybe I'm naive. Maybe I just haven't paid attention. But you know something? This worries me. Even if it's been done a dozen times a year for the last 5 decades, it still worries me. On several levels... SudsyFist 0 #10 December 11, 2002 i can see your point, michele. it just struck me as a 'so-and-so intercepted a boat from colombia, and what did they find buried in the cargo hold??? cocaine!!!' sorta thing. and i'm like, bfd! steve
Gawain 0 #11 December 11, 2002 Quotec'mon folks, the only news here is that the ship was intercepted; such weaponry has been standard dprk export product to a number of middle eastern countries for years. The significance is just that. Why did the ship not identify itself? Why was no flag flying? This may be an attempt to begin a new trade for fuel oil, since we are choking them of that because of their violation of an agreement signed in 1996. Something else is afoot...DPRK has been "freely" exporting them...why the attempt at being incognito? So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! SudsyFist 0 #12 December 11, 2002 Quote Something else is afoot...DPRK has been "freely" exporting them...why the attempt at being incognito? hold on there, hosse... nobody said nuttin 'bout freely exportin'... dprk is considered by the u.s. and its allies as a dangerous rogue nation ("axis of evil" should ring a bell), and weapons sales to other countries also perceived as such comprise a significant chunk of its ailing economy; advertising their shipments of product is not in their best interest (think red and white bullseye). not to mention that their whole m.o. is secrecy and deception... about *everything* (even when the truth is blatantly obvious!). besides, i seriously doubt that we ourselves put up neon lights when we're shipping nbc weapons around (oh no, not us! ). steve
freeflir29 0 #13 December 11, 2002 Seems pretty significant to me. We caught them red handed exporting restricted weapons technology. I think their is a big story burried here that will come out down the road.
Gawain 0 #14 December 11, 2002 Quote hold on there, hosse... nobody said nuttin 'bout freely exportin'... True, but there aren't sanctions against DPRK like there are against Iraq. The SCUD missile was a "best seller" of the former USSR. DPRK, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, India all use this platform in one way or another. Despite our stance for a "rogue" state, our policy has never had a strong pillar for interdiction of this technology in transit. That is changing, but even as we release this ship to Yemen today, we wanted to ensure that the exchange between Yemen and DPRK is legal. That is certainly possible, just like the rest of world acknowledges Cubas existence.... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
