jessd 0 #33 December 12, 2002 I tried to ski for the first time last winter - what a nightmare. Made it down half the mountain by falling down every other second. I had bruises all over my side and legs. A few weeks later tried snowboarding, thought it might be easier to stay on my feet - it was way harder than the skiing. I hate the snow anyway. steve1 5 #34 December 12, 2002 My youngest daughter wants to take up snow-boarding. I've skied ever since I was a kid, but don't have a clue what snow-boarding is like, so I'm having trouble advising her whether to take up skiing or snowboarding. Has anyone out there tried both, and which do you prefer? I'd rather skydive than ski, but skiing is fun. Especially when it's too cold to jump. PhreeZone 20 #35 December 12, 2002 Skiing is a lot easier. Snowboarding is a lot of balence and you have to be even more leg and foot aware then skiing. I still do both but my board allows for swapping feet in mid hill so its still a novelity for me.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Zenister 0 #36 December 12, 2002 i skied a good bit when i was growing up, but as soon as i stood on a snow board it was like heaven.. i think the reason people find skiing at first is the balance is more like walking 2 arms 2 poles. Riding is a single point skill and somewhat counter intuitive, but kids can pick it up really easily with some intial coaching. there are 10 year olds that blow by me all the time...its rather humbling sometimes. also..IMO snowboarding (at a reasonable level) seems less injury prone, since you wont have four limbs trying to go four directions at once when you wipe out...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. newshooter12 0 #37 December 12, 2002 I hate to disagree with Phree, but while they both have their uses. Snowboarding gets my vote. I'd certainly do powder on either. Any kind of traversing on skis. Bumps, unless you're a master on a board, skis are more fun. Ice - my morrow truth does better then any skis I've owned have. -For one it has a more friendly learning curve then skiing. -The clothing/equipment tends to be a bit more relaxed and comfortable than ski gear. -I think a snowboard has a more natural and relaxed body position. -Fewer sharp objects to hurt yourself with when you fall... because we all have seen some nasty yard sales on the ski slopes. -Less to keep track of on and off the hill. -Newer Tech... you don't have to sit on your ass anymore to strap each run. Some step in bindings are the best of both worlds. (support/flexibility and speed) -My board keeps me out of the bumps... where I've had too many people I know blow out their knees.Just do what've makes you happier. Their both fun and the lift ticket costs the same either way. Matt P.S. I got a bit burnt out from skiing (instructing level 1s to be more precise) and it's a new challenge. ***Disclaimer*** (I ski instructed, @Holiday Valley, for three seasons during college and have been skiing since I could walk. My parents started me on cross country skies when I started walking and I picked up Alpine from a friends dad when I was 10. Started with my first board in highschool, sold it for new skis, borrowed gear while instructing, then bought another board when I graduated from college.)
