Jessica 0 #1 December 11, 2002 ...and I'm in the kind of pain that I naively thought I would only encounter in Hell. That said, Snowboarding Is Fun!™ I want to learn how. I'm going to buy boots and go jogging in them because even though I have freakishly well developed calves, they are apparently too frail to withstand two hours of being strapped to a board.Skydiving is for cool people only
Jessica 0 #2 December 11, 2002 I would also like to add that I am extremely disappointed in myself. I have considered myself an Xtreme Chick™ and I figured I would take to snowboarding like a duck to water. Instead, it was more like um...a goldfish to sand. Something like that anyway.Skydiving is for cool people only
Viking 0 #3 December 11, 2002 lol i tried it once. Rule to the wise don't try to learn snowboarding on Ice it doesn't work very well. PhreeZone 20 #4 December 11, 2002 She was'nt that bad for a first timer. At least you made it all the way down one of the longer runs before we gave up for the day. And towing you around was a lot of fun. Now if you'd just learn how to use the brakes..... That being said... Skiing in Ohio sucks. I'm not sure why its called skiing here, it needs to be called go down hill for 15 seconds then wait for 5 minutes to do it over.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Casch 0 #5 December 11, 2002 I bet you the next couple times you go you will pick it up really fast. Basic snowboarding can be learned by yourself very quickly. By basic I mean you fall down less You will probably kick ass next time, instead of fall on it hehe i remember when I started...I learned real quick how to fall on anything but my ass! Then once I thought I was good enough to get off the tow rope, I look it straight to an intermediate slope, caught an edge and slammed head first into a VERY solid snowbank. Now I have a snowboard helmet that serves double duty, I jump it also.
SudsyFist 0 #6 December 11, 2002 here's a great exercise to get them calves in shape for snowboarding: 1. bare them feet. nekkid. 2. find an area with clear floorspace near a wall (for balance) 3. stand on your tiptoes, facing the wall 4. spread thumbtacks (or jacks or other small torture devices) under your heels and all around where you're standing 5. stay on your toes after just a couple of sessions, you should be good to go. steve
Scoby 0 #7 December 11, 2002 I figured that skiing and skateboarding experience would translate directly into snowboarding godhood. Instead, I spent my first day on the slopes nursing a sore ass. Lessons were in order. Fast forward a few years, and now I shred. Ok, I'm not Terje, but I'm a reasonably competent snowboarder. Oddly enough, I found a sport that does translate well from snowboarding...it's wakeboarding! My friend got a wakeboard and I found that I could get up and ride well immediately. My non-snowboarding friends all pretty much sucked. Anyway, snowboarding is fun. It's definitely my second favorite sport...I'm so stoked it's winter. Zenister 0 #8 December 11, 2002 do slow heel raises while your brushing your teeth, ironing, riding in elevators etc..any activity where you have to stand for a length of time.. BTW rental gear generally sucks!! so getting boots that fit well (and good bindings) will make it loads easier on your calves, once you get comfortable you'll move from your hips more than 'forcing' it with your calves..lots like skydiving, pick a line and flow with it... oh yeah have fun!!! not so patiently waiting for snow to accumulate on Mt. Baker..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
fudd 0 #9 December 11, 2002 Pain is the only way to learn snowboarding Sleep on your stomack and don't sit. Hit the slopes once more. After a day or to you will get the hang of it Soon you'll ride the half-pipe and do the big jump! There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't. skygal3 0 #11 December 11, 2002 mmmhmmmm...it is sad, isn't it? I spent Sunday on the Mtn for the first time... my left knee is developing a deep beautiful bruise, and my left shin is turning blue...it is amazing how badly we can feel about ourselves when the 3 year olds go zipping by...good luck, goldfish. bwilling 0 #12 December 11, 2002 You go girl!!! I've taken my kids skiing the last couple of years, and they've expressed some interest in trying snowboarding... but I've been hesitant to try it myself, because I seem to see only two kinds of people on snowboards... those that make it look extremely easy, and those that make it look impossible! I don't ski that well, but well enough that I don't fall much skiing most intermediate terrain, and well enough for it to be fun for me, so I stick with that... Snowboarding does look like fun though! "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."
Vallerina 2 #13 December 11, 2002 You are a much tougher chick than I am! You'd never catch me on top of snow attempting to have fun. Well, unless I was drunk...then I could pretend I was warm....There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
pd190 0 #14 December 11, 2002 I rode a snowboard once........drunk and naked down an icy hill. Good thing they had those straw bales at the bottom of the hill or I would have had some serious road rash when crossing the highway at the bottom.
Vallerina 2 #15 December 11, 2002 Quote ........drunk and naked down an icy hill. Always the best way to start any story Anyways, Jess...aren't you happy to know that Midwest winters aren't that bad and fun is still possible (once again, I need alcohol involved for fun to occur.)There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

freeflir29 0 #17 December 11, 2002 Snowboarding is HELL on your calves ain't it.... I'd have to say DEEP powder in the trees was always my favorite. Was there any "Lift Drama" that you had to deal with?
PhreeZone 20 #18 December 11, 2002 Oh... the Lift Drama... just the usual I'm scared of heights and the issues that all first timers have of slipping as they get off the lift for the first time. Conditions were a bit icy so lots of people were falling all over the mountian. Overall shes not bad for a first timer... once she quits trying to go and switch feet all the time.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

skycat 0 #20 December 11, 2002 I agree, Friday hurt like hell. A girl I skydive with is on the CU Snowboarding team so she gave me private lessons on Sunday, by run 3 I was crusing all over the mountain. It doesn't even really hurt when you are going fast, well unless you wipe out, but I must say catwalks suck big ones. I'm so stoked though, 1st weekend snowboarding and I've already advanced to the "easier" blues. Derek on the other hand is a frigging natural, 1st day out he did 5 runs and is cruising all over the damn place. If you are going to go again I highly recommend lessons. They teach you all about stability and stuff (or melibe did anyway), once I got it figured out I realized it's alot like harness shifting. If you are getting boots I recommend Salomon Ivy. I got a pair on sale from REI and they are so comfy, well other than the fact that they are snowboarding boots and not suppose to be really comfy Fly it like you stole it! PLFKING 4 #23 December 11, 2002 Quote they are apparently too frail Glad you had fun. It's hard to exercise those fast-twitch muscles you use for stabilizing...your best bet is just to keep snowboarding and work through it. I used to ski about 10-12 times a season...didn't go for two years, then went one Saturday and spent 6 hours on the slopes non-stop. I literally "walked funny" for 2 weeks afterwards. Where'd y'all go ? Does Ohio have hills big enough for that ? Or did you go to W.Va. ? Don
Rookeskydiver 0 #24 December 11, 2002 just dont over due it at first. When someone takes up a different bobby such as snowboarding, they are totally using different muscle and muscle fibers around the chins and claves. When i start boarding in the beginning of every season, my chins hurt like a mofo. so my advice is watch out for those chin splints and just have fun. don't fall on ice...it hurts PCSS # 1 Rookeskydiver "Its a Wonka Bar"....."Go ahead Charlie open it, lets see that golden ticket"
BikerBabe 0 #25 December 11, 2002 1 word for you: SKIS! Sorry, I love my skis. Actually, I recently tried those short skis, and they are a blast! Plus, I still get to go to Taos...the best snow south of the Colorado border! I love Taos. always good snow and killer terrain. Just another argument for skis...Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
