Some planes today do use the idea.

Hey if your old enough to remember the 6 million dollar man TV show...the crash at the begining of the film was one of the lifting body test planes from the 60s and 70s..it was short and fat and rolled and rolled over end and kicked up dust. very dramatic...

There was a pretty cool show on this on the Discovery Wings channel. They showed the design process for the lifting body. It was definitely an under-the-radar, unofficial development program. Fascinating stuff!

Thank goodness for Discovery Wings...

I too, saw that episode. I think it's amazing and a tribute to the research as to how it influenced the design of the Space Shuttle and is essentially the design behind the upcoming "escape" module for the Int'l Space Station.
