"thats gay" ??????

Recommended Posts

Narcimund's irony. Did you guys get it in the "Homo II" thread? A homosexual is indignant about the evolving meaning of the word "gay". That's hilarious! I love that kind of subtle humor! It's like Dennis Miller when he was on Monday Night Football. You're a real crack up. Keep 'em coming.

Lest you think I'm a numbskull, I'm was quite aware of the irony as well. Notice I said Personally, I'm not a big fan of this new meaning and I DIDN'T say, "Gay" is an English word with a specific meaning and nobody can change it!

Yes, words change meaning over time. It's only recently that I've realized the sexual aspect is being bleached out of this usage leaving only the raw hatred, disgust, and meaningless insult behind.

Since it's been a deep, core part of my life since I was 13 to bleach out the hatred and disgust from the word, leaving only the sexual meaning, you possibly can understand why I'm personally not overjoyed by this contrary movement.

'nuff said.

If you are assuming when you write this that "homosexual" is a new meaning for the word "gay," you are quite wrong. Gay has meant gay for a rather long time (in America, early 20th century and before), but the climate being what it was, the public chose to hear the meaning "happy" rather than "homosexual."

This goes for this thread as well as the Homos II thread, which I didn't jump into because I don't like jumping into the middle of debates, but there has been so much research done in queer studies by straight, bisexual, and gays and lesbians that render most of the homophobic opinions voiced around here incorrect and ignorant. If you engage in a debate and do not remotely understand your opponent's argument, you will sound ignorant. This goes for any argument, be it on sexuality, tax credits, or war. The responsibility rests firmly with all parties involved to figure out what they're talking about before they open their mouths.

I disagree.

People may have a visceral feeling about a topic before they learn more about it. If you insist that they know all about all sides before they express an opinion, you will force them to keep their opinion to themselves. If they open their mouths and expose their ignorance to you, apparently you will attack them for being ignorant, when they are actually attempting to address their ignorance through discussion.

I've found the smartest people to be the ones who invite others to tell them why they are wrong about something.

I abhor the tyranny of experts.

I'll half-agree with you. The smartest are the ones who invite information, not those who argue from their own lack of it.

There's a difference between saying, "I know next to nothing about X but here's my first impression ...," and saying "This is the truth about X: ..." when in fact, you know next to nothing about it.

You know I read all the "homo" threads and purposely made no comment. And here's why:

We have on these forums gays, lesbians, straights, animal lovers, men, women, Americans, Europeans, Africans, Australians, liberals, conservatives, moderates, skydivers with tons of experience, skydivers with little experience, divorcees, happily married, singles, etc. In other words, we have PEOPLE! People who love to skydive or who are looking forward to skydiving. But we're all people, with beating hearts, blood flowing through our veins, with feelings and emotions and everything else that goes with being human.

God, I love dz.com.:)

And I would say it has less to do with "smart" than "open-minded" or "mature", unless you are equating these.

Although I would add that stating opinions based on incomplete fact, rumor and even total gut instinct is fine, in fact, I'm doing it right now. All I know about argumentative discourse I learned on the Internet.

In fact, I think it is healthy to have debates on any topic, informed or not.

However, it is only healthy if the participants are willing to listen and understand all the arguments, and open to changing their minds, admitting they are wrong, etc.

And if you don't agree with me, you are all poopy-heads and I will have nothing more to do with you. :P

You're absolutely right when you say this, Deuce, but this is not at all what I'm talking about. The purpose of a debate is not to understand the other party, but to push your own agenda. Think of a presidential debate. Were Bush or Gore interested in each other's views?

And when someone shouts, as Narcimund points out, that homosexuality is just plain wrong, end of story, this person is not interested in learning about other lifestyles or inviting "others to tell them why they are wrong," but in pushing their own anti-gay agenda.

As somebody going in to the field of academia, I can sympathize with your frustration with "the tyranny of experts." Believe me, I deal with it all the time. Fortunately, academia is beginning to understand that there is no objective perspective on any issue and younger scholars are more willing to admit their own limitations in terms of both understanding and subjectivity. Nonetheless, in the context of a debate I will put my money in an informed opinion, not in one that rests wholly in visceral feeling.

Okay! Misunderstanding. I was thinking of the matter in the context of exchanging ideas and thoughts, not pushing an agenda. Two experts debating is a completely different thing than what I was thinking when I posted.

You bet. If I'm going to sit down and listen, and not converse, the person lecturing better know their shit, or at least be able to make a decent argument. Far too few people can debate these days. Showmanship has overshadowed articulation.

Best of luck in academia.:)
