Balloon jump

Recommended Posts

It was funny I could feel the balloon shaking as the first group very fearfully stood up on the basket in anticipation of exiting.

I wish our video would have turned out.:( I would love to see the look on my face as I exited. :o

x's and o's,

Yeah, did one once - what fun! The ride up was as exciting as the jump. The coolest thing was not knowing when or where we would exit. We flew until the pilot told us to leave so he could climb above the mountain we were approaching. The last one out actually had the least altitude, because the pilot had the balloon in a sink so it wouldn't pop up like an annoying internet ad when we left.

oh balloon jumps... the silence when you step off the balloon echos the essence of how no words can describe the feeling.

i've only done 2, but they are incredibly memorable... especially this last one at Rantoul, sunset load on the last Saturday night, with a couple new awesome people in my life. all week i wanted to do a balloon jump, but had to wait till it was the right time. Tuesday night, i stayed up with a handful of people around the fire, specifically, and musician named keith. as the crowd dwindled, keith busted out his magical guitar and amazing voice, and he played until the sun came up, the early morning balloons took off, and the first load landed... being out there for hours listening to a man's heart pour through his fingers and his voice was one of the most amazing nights of my life. He wasn't being payed, he had no good reason to play for a few of us other than he was so passionate about his music, and was so charged by a small captive audience. he lit us up... we lit him up... play one more... play one more... I get chills thinking about it. sometimes life directs our paths to cross with others in amazing ways... Keith only came to Rantoul to hang out, as a student with a dozen or so jumps, never been in a balloon, he lives in Quincy and is drawn to the convention for the people. we were lucky people... as the balloons rose that morning, i told keith i wanted to take him for a ride in the balloon when i jumped... i lost track of keith for the rest of the week, never did see him out by the fire as he was that night... finally saturday came, and i manifested for the sunset balloon jump. someone on our load did not show up, so i knew, i had to find keith. i did. he grabbed his camera and we ran to catch our balloon. the ride was sweet, and the jump with ed was breathtaking, above all, being able to share it with keith who had given me so much was just... (i'm stuck to find a word to do it justice) i think you get the idea.

balloon jumps are amazing, people in skydiving can be so much more amazing...

Balloon jumps are the best...Learn to rappel and try that out of the balloon next time. Hanging there in near silence enjoying the early morning view.
So, what happens when you reach the proverbial end of the rope? The fun continues of course...

What an awesome idea! Can you integrate the figure-8, or whatever its called, into your container harness, or do you wear another harness underneath?

No, you need to wear a seperate harness. (They make base gear with an integrated harness, but doubt you'd get that just for a balloon jump...) and you could use a figure 8 or a pyramid belay device, but if you have climbing gear, use a grigri, self braking so you can hang with your hands free if necessary, then slide off the end of the rope when you want to.

Lance did that at Rantoul on the above mentioned balloon jump, got an awesome photo of Cajones and I jumping off the balloon, but we haven't seen or heard from Lance since, except that he wasn't sure where that roll of film was. So if anyone know's Lance, was shooting for Martini Shots, pass the message along. That jump was very special to me and I would love to have a copy of that photo. I would appreciate it very much. I'll pay for developing, shipping, whatever. I'd just love to have that photo.

thanks

Since there'd be little point in buying a climbing harness just for one jump, I'd consider using a 'rope-harness', or what ever you really call it. Just a length of rope tied around you in a certain way, not as comfy as a real harness, but should do just fine for one descent.

i was taught it was a "swiss -seat" and yeah that would work well as long as it was secure. it even avoids the problem swiss seats have in rappelling, no hard stop on the thin leg straps..

ive got a light-weight black diamon harness that should work great..i think i'd just tie the figure * thru that harness rather than add a carbiner too..

But if you don't have a carabiner in the system you'd have to thread the whole rope through the 8 before you can start the descent... that or tie up the harness just before exit.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on the matter, the last time I've climbed was in '99 and the last time a rappelled with an 8 was in '96...:$

Its probably a good suggestion to put a Krab on your chest strap to avoid flipping backwards and ending up inverted...
I used a set up like this to take some s/l hang up shots a few years back, it was a 'this is what happens, this is what you'll see type of thing' from the student's perspective.
