Who's next?

This story on Yahoo news is disturbing. Not because the T's weren't crossed (everyone detained has been stated to have some violation or another), but because a different standard is used up for different people.

Before hearing about how it's perfectly all right, because there was, or might have been, some sort of violation, understand that only the first level of anything was checked. At least one Canadian citizen has been sent to Syria (he was a refugee in Canada), where he's now jailed. How does that quote go about "first they came for the Jews" again?

Yes, there were problems with the paperwork of many of the airplane bombers. And most criminals don't wear their seat belts. But being a Muslim with visa problems no more makes you a terrorist than being a non-seat-belt wearer makes you a hardened criminal.

I thought we'd gotten to the point where we could be embarrassed about interning Japanese in camps; it seems instead that we're just making sure it's only SOME Muslims. If you wear an abaya, you'd better not get any speeding tickets, huh?

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

This is shameful, and will only increase the threat of terrorism.

I fear my own government far more than I fear terrorists, and I'm white. God help the brown people.

That really is absurd. I don't like it when we create laws to address problems created by the non-enforcement of other laws. We're asking only illegal aliens from certain countries to register? I could agree with this if the law applied to EVERYONE from ANY COUNTRY. It doesn't help that the INS is being secretive about the numbers of those who are being detained.

This is just sad.

I flew to Tokyo just a few weeks after 9/11. The police in Japan aren't as politically correct as here in the U.S. While I was in the airport, they rounded up everyone who looked remotely from the middle east, questioned them and reviewed their passports, etc. Most were from India, and there was even a shaggy-looking bearded American that was cursing after they let him go. I think I have a pic here somewhere:

I had to take it quick, so it's blurry. They were confiscating cameras of a few people that were photographing this.
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
