billvon 3,107 #28 December 23, 2002 >This type of attention-grabbing sensationalism just pisses me off to no end! Why? Would "Man arrested for a crime" be a better headline? It was descriptive. If a priest molested a child, would you be offended if the report mentioned he was a priest?
Iflyme 0 #29 December 23, 2002 I bet you wouldn't even have read the article if not for the sensational headline. So that means it worked. It got your attention ... and now this newpaper can tell it's advertisers they have another reader, and they can bump up the price of the ads!
ECVZZ 0 #30 December 23, 2002 QuoteWhy? Because the fact that he is an instructor has nothing to do with the crime. Because rape is rape, regardless of who perpetrates it. And yes, in my opinion, "Man arrested on suspicion of rape" would've been a better header for the article. QuoteIf a priest molested a child, would you be offended if the report mentioned he was a priest? I am offended anytime the media sensationalize a story to the detriment of one group of people. Yes...Priests included. Perhaps you could explain how this is good for the skydiving community as a whole, but I fail to see any logic in it other than attention grabbing. QuoteI bet you wouldn't even have read the article if not for the sensational headline. So that means it worked. It got your attention ... and now this newpaper can tell it's advertisers they have another reader, and they can bump up the price of the ads! I've read this same newspaper cover-to-cover every day for the last 18 years. The headlines have naught to do with what I read. I filter out the bullshit as I read it and decide for myself what is useful information...and the fact that he was a skydiver was a useless piece of information. As I said, a rapist is a rapist. Regardless of his occupation! As for the price of advertising, I could care less. If the paper reaches a price that I am unwilling to pay, I can get the same news in the C.C. Trib. So, now that you actually know a little about my habits and inclinations, what/ how much was it that you want to lose? G. Jones "I've never been quarantined.
