What the hell does skydiving have to do with it??? (Bad press)

Recommended Posts

An AP article in today's Reno Gazette Journal has a bold type header reading "Skydiving instructor arrested in rape case". According to the article, the man was arrested in connection with the rape of a 22 year old prostitute in Oakland.

Other than the header, and the opening sentence identifying the city in which he worked (thus, the dropzone), this article (not to mention the crime itself) has not one damn thing to do with skydiving!

This type of attention-grabbing sensationalism just pisses me off to no end! >:(>:(>:( I'd like to find who was responsible for allowing the header and bitch-slap the asshole!!!

true, but as with any occupation they draw the parallels..."school teacher arrested in connection in rape case"..."minister arrested in connection with rape case"...rarely though, if it is not an actual occupation, will they list it. "Wendy's employee arrested..." rarely happens. It could be seen as a compliment;)

How do you rape a prostitute? By not paying her? I mean really now...

edited to say, don't flame me...I am not trying to justify...just giving my 2 cents...(katie steps back slowly...)

I'm not saying they don't have rights persay...but look at the facts...A prostitute sells sex for money..if this asshole who raped her walked up to her and asked to have rough sex with her for money, I can't imagine she would turn him down...it is what she does!!! On the other hand, by raping a prostitute, can't they also charge him with shoplifting??:D

She can be raped in the same way that a wife can be raped by her husband.

She might not have entered into a contract; he might be an acquaintance who force a freebie. She might not have been working that day. I assume that she can, in fact, turn down a customer.
Personally, I think it's kind of neat that a news reporter acknowledges that a prostitute can be raped.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I totally agree with you and it was a stupid comment that I made in jest. By calling it bad press by highlighting "skydiver" they are also pulling a shot by saying "prostitute"...by saying prostitute it has more of an implication that she was in fact working. Prostitutes are raped everyday probably because of the fact that people see them as willing sex targets that one would less likely feel guilty about taking advantage of rather than any other non "working woman"...anyway...stepping away now...[:/]

Unfortunately, I don't think the judge is going to see it that way. Given her profession, it's going to be hard for her to prove her case, no matter what any of us think. Judges have personal bias just like everyone else.

As far as him being a skydiving instructor, it makes the case a little more sensational, and sensationalism sells. The press is selling us a product after all. If it was a cop or a politician, they would list his profession as well, but probably not a restaurant employee or a factory worker. This is part of the reason why I hate the media.
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
