jessd 0 #1 December 25, 2002 I'm going to buy a digital camera this weekend. I don't even know what to look for in one. I don't want to spend more than $350. Any suggestions? Derekbox 0 #3 December 26, 2002 Im looking at a Canon. The S45. But thats $500ish. They have others tho (S30/S40) that are high end point and shoot. Might want to take a look at those. The prices on them are coming down. D http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-1429209.html?tag=st.cn.1.cameras.1429209

pilotdave 0 #5 December 26, 2002 I have the kodak dx3600. Picture quality is decent (http://www.skydivingmovies.com/sunshine.jpg), but there's a bit of a delay between hitting the button and when the picture actually takes. Also a pretty slow shutter speed. Makes action shots pretty much impossible. Other problem is battery life. I got mine used with a rechargable battery. The battery wasn't THAT old, but it would only charge enough to take literally 2 or 3 pictures with flash by the end. I bought a new one (VERY hard to find the right battery, which was $15), and the life is much improved. Mine's got a 128 meg flash memory card which lets it take way more pictures than I ever need to (over 700 at the lower quality, which is good enough for internet use) or something like 20 minutes of video. If you want more info about that camera, PM me. I really can't say if I'd recommend it or not since I havent tried any other cameras in the same price range. AndyMan 7 #6 December 26, 2002 I have a fuji finepix 2800. 2.8 megapixel, and 6X zoom, all for under $350. Those specs make it an awesome deal. Now the downside - it's too big to fit in my pocket, and the viewfinder is a small LCD screen and the screen is WAY too dark in low light. Taking low light pictures involves pointing and guessing, then evaluating. The viewfinder is completely useless in low light. One thing I'd make sure of when I buy a new camera, is that the viewfinder is glass and lens, not LCD. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. jtval 0 #8 December 26, 2002 I found REGULAR AA rechargeable batteries($7 for 6 battereis). they work fine! takes days of video and pictures, if you dont keep looking at the lcd, it works forever! it does have the slow pic thing but if you are expecting something to happen you can hold the button to the first detent then snap the picture in any action shot!My photos My Videos
Scoby 0 #9 December 26, 2002 I have a Minolta Dimage 5. It's a SLR-style digicam with a really nice 7x lens. I think it's like $600 though (which is bizarre, because I got my for $500 a year ago). But I just got my girlfriend a Nikon 2500 for christmas. I paid $225 and it's really cool. The lens rotates inside the body.
jessd 0 #10 December 26, 2002 I went out for an extended lunch a bought a digital camera. I got the Olympus C-4000 zoom. It was $500 - more than I wanted to spend, but, it seems like a good one. 4-megapixels (whatever those are). If I figure out how to use it soon I may post my picture. DZBone 0 #11 December 27, 2002 Nice choice. I was going to say that the thing to do is get as much resolution as you possibly can. The Olympi do well here. Also, check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for tons and tons of reviews. BTW, now that you have the camera, take a picture of a blank white wall and look for "hot pixels". These are manufacturing defects in the CCD, and if you find one, exchange the camera right away. They look like tiny colored or dark splotches (tiny) that always appear in the same place on the image. They are fairly common, but unacceptable. Enjoy! _________________________________________________ If you hadn't read this, would it have made a sound?
indyz 1 #12 December 27, 2002 Quote4-megapixels (whatever those are). Mega just means one million (roughly), so your camera can take images made up of 4 million pixels. A pixel is just a dot of color, like on a monitor or TV screen. A 4-megapixel image is 2448 pixels wide and 1632 pixels tall. By comparison, your computer monitor probably shows 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels high.
